Truck Got Jacked Today...

This thread has got me thinking it’s time to install a military ammo can in the back with a combination lock. No need to carry keys that way, simple and cheap.

I'm starting to think about a heavy-duty locking center console and somehow rigging an alarm trigger to the door handles... Maybe even figuring out how to rig the whole chassis like an electric fence until disarmed by remote...

Why not just pull the rods from the lock cylinder in all but the Driver's door. Cuts your odds down to 1/3 of the same thing happening. Then again, if they're going to get it they're going to get in.

If you're really gutsy you could weld the door handles from the inside...

THIS is what they wanted to get to:

It's probably threads like this that show thieves how to get into specific trucks.

On older vehicles that microswitch is actually a physical linkage that runs to the actuator...

I just rolled my eyes and thought " great, now everybody knows how to get in my truck" then read your post and laughed.

Leaving my truck on the Atlanta streets all night with homeless people around it and a sketchy alarm system with apparently stick on door handles and a convenient unlock button inside the door makes me feel comfy

At least if I snap the key off in the ignition, lock my spare inside, I know I can just pop the outer door handle off and push a button.

That's funny, Loud and I were just talking about built trucks in ATL. :flipoff2:

That little microswitch is what actually unlocks your doors - same as hitting the inside button - however, when THIS switch is triggered, the alarm does NOT go off as the ECU thinks that the key tumblers in the lock have been turned, thereby granting access without alarm.

Looks like they pryed out the handle to get to the microswitch. Then, all they have to do is spin the head on the switch or even cross the wires together and the truck will unlock. Very hard to prevent this from happening...

Great pics, definitely helps to visualize how to steal a new truck!

I thought you'd left us for good? Still driving the 07 or has it sold?

Those pics are from my 2000 UZJ before I sold it.

I got rid of the 07 UZJ a couple months ago. Actually picked up a few $K on the sale. Driving a GS450h for now. Thinking of getting either an 80 or a late 80s K5 Blazer/Jimmy for a beater. Haven't decided. Would prefer a large somewhat modern SUV with removable top and Toyota drivetrain, but that doesn't exist without involving a sawsall and custom canvas.

I'm still lurking.... :-) good community here.

98s are getting pretty cheap. It would look good as a convertible.

How about mounting a steel plate behind the handle to defeat the screwdriver attack.

Here is the concept used to protect GM trucks subject to the same attack.

How the alarm was disarmed still doesn't make sense to me. When I unlock my 99 with the transponder non valet key or the master key in the door only, the alarm goes off every time until I turn the ignition? Is my truck weird?, no aftermarket alarm, all stock. If this happened to me, I think the alarm would go off.

You are saying that if you unlock the doors by hand the alarm goes off every time.

If so I would say your's is acting up or has been set up differently. There probably are "third world" settings for the security system.

Unfortunately places like Phoenix, Las Vegas and Southern California now need those settings. Pretty soon we'll need high walls with glass on top and gates.

Not normal...

It's obvious the bad guys already know about it or this thread wouldn't be here.

Now the OWNERS know about it, and hopefully can come up with a way to disable it.

Two ways to go about it, IMO...either install something in the door that will block access to the lock mechanism from the door handle, or get a loud ass alarm, lower your comprehensive deductible and hope for the best.

Me personally, I will probably opt for the latter. It seems like it would be easy enough to install some sort of steel plate behind the door handle to block access...but I look at it from the bad guy's perspective; he's a pro, he's been doing this a while, and he's expecting the technique to work one way or another - so how much EXTRA damage will he do if he's trying to access the lock from behind the door handle but it's not working, yet he continues to pry from different angles thinking that he will eventually get in? The whole door could get mucked up, then he gives up on the lock, smashes out the window in frustration, and steals your sh*t anyway. When they want in, they will get in.

Most important thing is to keep your valubles on your person, or lock it up in your house. Don't give the bastards anything to take.

Instead of a noisey alarm, why don't you get an in-car security box or safe. Especially if you are going to leave a wallet, computer, phone or weapon in there. Not saying they ain't defeatable, but it sure makes it much much tougher and time consuming which means they will move on to another car.

I got a box where I put my briefcase with iPad and computer when I am in the pub or mall or something. I put my Glock in their when traveling with it. It is often more secure, and cheaper than many alarms. I hate aftermarket alarms with OEM imobilizers. They seem to give me problems after a couple years.
