Fished the Green river yesterday evening (delayed harvest section near Tryon, NC) and absolutely thrashed the fish. That is a beautiful area if you aren't familiar with it. All of the fishing is catch and release artificial lures but if you just want to catch some fish and have some fun you can't get much better than the Green River right now. If you want more info let me know.

Nate

Nate that sounds awesome......... I'd love the paticulars on how to get there. I was over fisihing the Tuck for a little bit yesterday me and my pops both caught a couple, but nothing like that day I was fishing with you and Andy......

JP....take I-26 past Hendersonville towards Tryon and Columbia, NC. Take exit 28. Turn left onto Green River Cove Road. This road drops about 1100 feet in less than a mile and drops you into the gorge to an area called Fishtop Falls. You will see a parking lot on the left and access to the river. That is the beginning of the delayed harvest section which goes downstream for 2+ miles or so. There are good ripple sections to fish and then you have to move down stream because there are DEEP holes you can't wade. This river is a tailrace so check the dam release times...the days they release water it is usually done in the morning but check to make sure so that you don't get washed away. Just pick your spots. There are houses and gamelands along the river throughout the stretch of Delayed Harvest but I haven't had any issues accessing the water. I was using nymphs (copper johns, flashback, prince nymphs, and pheasant tails) and all worked well. Make sure that you are fishing them deep enough with a strike indicator. If you want to meet me up there with your pops sometime JP just let me know.

Cool

Thanks for the tip, the company I work for is based out of Tryon. I can start going after work.

It sounds like JP's gig at the Pizza shop will keep that from happening.

The small stream that dumps into the Green at the FTF parking lot supposedly has decent wild trout fishing too, at least that's what that guy told us the last time you and I fished there together. I may try to cruise up there and wet a line on Sunday. Good primer before salmon / lake trout fishing in NY next week.

JP....I think the time change and solunar tables have done something to the fishing because it is off the charts right now. I fished the Tuck yesterday with a customer for an hour or so and we absolutely tore it up!! I will give you and your pops the secret rig that is working right now but you will have to call me. Caught over 20 trout in the hour I was on the Tuck on this rig and stopped keeping count at 30 on the Green, one of the fish was over 19" and 2.5 to 3lbs. Let me know if you want the info on the secret.

good god man........ that is a lot of fish!!! yeah I'll hit ya up for the secret :grinpimp:

Heck yeah Marshall!! Blow the dust off that stuff and lets do it up.
JP....I was just joking about calling me. The rig I have been using is this...

Using a 5x tippet (you don't need to use 7x that crap breaks too easily and the fish aren't that picky).

Tie on a bead head. I use a Copper John size 16 will work, Serendipities, Pheasant Tails, IKO Caddis, "Fly Formerly Known as Prince" get it on Orvis it has silver tinsel instead of white feather and the flash really attracts the fish.

Now get another 16"-24" of 5x tippet and tie it to the bend/shank of the bead head you just tied onto the main line of your rod. (I don't know what knot you use but I use an improved clinch knot for all of these knots on my flies. If you don't know how to tie one just google it and practice. It is by far the best knot to use.)

Once you have the additional 16"-24" of tippet hanging from your bead head tie on a pink San Juan worm. They will typically only come in one or two sizes. Pink is the color to use and the only place I have found Pink is a shop in Pennsylvania and DK Littleton in Greenville and the owner of DK said that he actually know the shop in PA and they get their flies from the same guy and that's why they both get the pink ones. I am sure other colors will work but pink has not failed me yet.

Put a split shot or I use Orvis Sink Putty (biodegradable) just a little bit/enough to sink the worm. Tyipically the size of a BB or half of that. You want to put it on the line about 6"-8" above the San Juan Worm.

Last but definitely not least when you get to the water try to get an idea of how deep it is. Put your strike indicator on the line above the bead head. On the Green and the Tuck I have found that most of the time it will be anywhere from 20"-36" above the bead head. I use Orvis Strike Putty because it is Biodegradable and easy to move and adjust the depth on your line. I also use the yarn indicators as well but they are harder to adjust and don't stay afloat as well when you are using a dropper rig with weight like this. You want your fly to basically hit the bottom and it may look like you are getting a bite. In that case move your indicator up an inch or two. Remember, adjust the depth of your fly at least 10-15 times before you ever think of changing your fly. Good luck man and I am telling you this will produce. Keep it secret though. I don't spend time figuring this stuff out to let every bone head (Richard) know how to catch fish.
****This isn't part of the rig just extra info...PMD's (Pale Morning Dunns) are in season right about now. They show up in the morning and if they do they should start to emerge by mid morning to noon. If you see fish breaking the surface near ripples and film on slower moving water use a PMD Cripple Dun.
P.S. I said exit 28 but that is the old exit number. It is exit 58 or 59 but it is the Saluda exit. When you get off the exit go left and then take the left onto Green River Cove Rd. Good luck!!

Trolling.........that ain't fishing.........just kidding.

JP,

I caught it right there in back of me. I thought that was obvious!! It will take at least two full single malts and ginger to loosen my tongue.

Hope to be on the Toccoa tailwater soon. Some nice browns there too. I am alos looking at a trip or two to NC this winter, not sure if I prefer the Davidson, Tuck, Nanty or what. But, I plan to hit at least those.

Mike
