Heck yeah Marshall!! Blow the dust off that stuff and lets do it up.
JP....I was just joking about calling me. The rig I have been using is this...
Using a 5x tippet (you don't need to use 7x that crap breaks too easily and the fish aren't that picky).
Tie on a bead head. I use a Copper John size 16 will work, Serendipities, Pheasant Tails, IKO Caddis, "Fly Formerly Known as Prince" get it on Orvis it has silver tinsel instead of white feather and the flash really attracts the fish.
Now get another 16"-24" of 5x tippet and tie it to the bend/shank of the bead head you just tied onto the main line of your rod. (I don't know what knot you use but I use an improved clinch knot for all of these knots on my flies. If you don't know how to tie one just google it and practice. It is by far the best knot to use.)
Once you have the additional 16"-24" of tippet hanging from your bead head tie on a pink San Juan worm. They will typically only come in one or two sizes. Pink is the color to use and the only place I have found Pink is a shop in Pennsylvania and DK Littleton in Greenville and the owner of DK said that he actually know the shop in PA and they get their flies from the same guy and that's why they both get the pink ones. I am sure other colors will work but pink has not failed me yet.
Put a split shot or I use Orvis Sink Putty (biodegradable) just a little bit/enough to sink the worm. Tyipically the size of a BB or half of that. You want to put it on the line about 6"-8" above the San Juan Worm.
Last but definitely not least when you get to the water try to get an idea of how deep it is. Put your strike indicator on the line above the bead head. On the Green and the Tuck I have found that most of the time it will be anywhere from 20"-36" above the bead head. I use Orvis Strike Putty because it is Biodegradable and easy to move and adjust the depth on your line. I also use the yarn indicators as well but they are harder to adjust and don't stay afloat as well when you are using a dropper rig with weight like this. You want your fly to basically hit the bottom and it may look like you are getting a bite. In that case move your indicator up an inch or two. Remember, adjust the depth of your fly at least 10-15 times before you ever think of changing your fly. Good luck man and I am telling you this will produce. Keep it secret though. I don't spend time figuring this stuff out to let every bone head (Richard) know how to catch fish.
****This isn't part of the rig just extra info...PMD's (Pale Morning Dunns) are in season right about now. They show up in the morning and if they do they should start to emerge by mid morning to noon. If you see fish breaking the surface near ripples and film on slower moving water use a PMD Cripple Dun.
P.S. I said exit 28 but that is the old exit number. It is exit 58 or 59 but it is the Saluda exit. When you get off the exit go left and then take the left onto Green River Cove Rd. Good luck!!
