I can usually shift into 4 HI when I am moving at any speed, but lately when I am moving at all, it just grinds and wont go at all. The transfer case has plenty of fluid, any ideas what could cause this?

I have an 89 Toyota 4x4 Pickup 22re.

Thanks

They are manual hubs, and it is doing this when they are locked. Manual tranny, also.

Thanks

are you sure one of your hubs isnt sticking or something?

As soon as I get off from work, I'll go try and lock and unlock the hubs a couple of times and then I'll try it again. How else can you tell if a hub is sticking?

With the hubs locked, you shouldn't be able to spin the front driveshaft by hand while the truck is stopped (transfer in 2HI). If you can, one or both of the hubs is not engaging.

You can narrow it down more by, again with the t-case in 2wd, lock the hub then try to turn the cv shaft on that side. If it doesn't lock then that hub's not engaging. Try both sides.

When unlocking and trying to lock them again, I didn't feel the usual click. I tried turning the drive shaft and found that the driver side hub wasn't locked. Will servicing the hubs fix this? Just take them apart and clean and grease them?

You guys are awesome, by the way. Thanks.

there is a link in the FAQ, at the top of this section.

Jerod has made a really slick walk through.

if you are a subscriber to http://4wdtoyotaowner.com/ you would remember that last issue there was also a nifty write up.

if you dont subscribe, you need to. evey toyota owner will find this mag as useful as a 12 and 14mm wrench. :D

oh yeah welcome aboard! :flipoff2:

Looks kind of involved, but not too difficult. Thanks again for all of the insight.

I spent about 10 times as long cleaning parts as I did taking them apart and putting them back together, I could probably disassemble and reasemble a hub in under 5 minutes now. But I've been into 4 sets of them now..... :D I'd say 2 Bannana as long as you have some snap ring pliers.

the only hard part is getting the cone washers out, leave nut on stud loose and pound down on nut.pops washer right out.

that works, but leaves room to screw up the threads.
hit the side of the hub instead and the washers will pop out

that doesnt always work especially in the "rust belt" i banged the hell out my hubs too no avail and they still wouuldnt come out.banging on the stud works first time everytime, and you dont leave peen marks all over your hub.you wont damage threads as long as you pound only on the nut. the metal is kinda thin around the outsde of the hub and i actually cracked it where the conewasher goes in by pounding on the outside of the hub.i dont recomend doing it this way.studs are cheaper than hubs!

I got the hubs apart and cleaned them, and now everything locks up fine. I didn't read the last three posts though, and I just hit the side of the hub, which worked fine...but I also have no rust on my vehicle, one of the benefits of the really dry climate in which I live.

Thanks again, you all have been very helpful.
