Took it in yesterday and it turns out the compressor is locked up. It doesn't spin freely. What can cause this?

Again, luckily, I have a spare and again, thanks to Manuchao

Cleaned it up and will put on soon.

The shop out here still has R-12, but it's expensive but worth it, I think.

I was also told that it may be a good idea to change out the dryer.

Should I go Toyota on this or Napa or the like?

How many o-rings are there to change out in swapping out these two components?

I'm hoping after doing this, they'll be able to charge it as they couldn't even get started because of the messed up compressor.

btw, I did a search, but didn't find any specific answers.

Thanks

Thanks

spinning with no or very low levels of refrig in the system.
the refrig also acts as a lube in the comp. no lube and the bearings drop like flies.

R12 is NOT worth it. Too many replacements out there that work just fine. In fact R134a should pull the register temps down to 40 or lower. That's as good as mine did with R12.

Personally, I haven't given up on the R-12 yet. Just picked a few cans up off Ebay for $25 a piece. I changed an o-ring in the wife's 91 FJ80 and my buddy shot 2 in for me. Cold as a frosty mug in there. Still haven't had to invest in changing a whole bunch of junk after all these years.

from what was told me, the condensor in our FJ60s is not designed efficiently enough to work as good with 134a as with R12 or Freeze12. The pipes are too big around and there aren't as many of them as there are on a more modern condensor. Freeze12 can be had pretty reasonably on eBay.

I can't say if it will have a long term effect on the components but I had mine switched over to 134a and it works flawlessly so far for about a month. I live in arizona and its been 110 plus quite a few days and it still works great. It honestly cools the car faster than my honda civic. No problems using it for long periods of time either.

I wonder if the new replacement dryers will work o.k. I was told by the A/C tech that the compressor can handle r134a just fine.

I just want to make sure that a new dryer can handle both r-12 and r134a if I ever convert.

Btw, does anyone have a Toyota P/N for the dryer? maybe a diagram

Jose.. when I had my 2f and recharged my AC with R-12... I went and bought a aftermarket dryer and it worked just fine...
With a truck like yours tho'.... (freaking clean)... I would try to get a ome dryer.......
Good luck ...

Hey Frank,

I was thinking the same things....I think I'll call up Cdan tomorrow and see if he can get it over hear PRONTO.....It's HOT!

How close are you to the border? It's been said that you can go to TJ and pay pennies on the dollar for an R12 charge because R12 isn't banned there.

nothing wrong with. works just fine.
atleast you could smell if you had a leak.

By that statement, I'm guessing you have never seen a propane charged frontal crash  It's kinda like having a small bomb mounted to the bumper.........

you arnt changing much at all actually. thats a very common misconception. all you change is the drier to a new one and flush out the system. usually done with brake clean and compressed air.

You do realize that Freeze 12 is 80% R134a, right?? There's nothing wrong with running 100% R134a. It will cool just as good, it's cheap, safe and you really don't have to change anything. Changing the dryer is a good idea, but you don't have to. Ask me how I know. ;p

yup

also the reason R-12 cools better is because the molecules are smaller than those of R134a which is why some cars take well to being converted over and others not as much. as they require more air through the condenser to keep head pressure down.

EDIT: I do A/C for all you Texas folk too just as a FYI

IMO it is better. I have R12 in my system still, and it blows way colder than ANY newer system i've felt, and when people get in my cruiser they always comment on how much colder the system is than other cars.
