I think someone needs to call 4Wheeler Magazine, cause this truck is awesome! I'd love to see a full blown article about this truck in my monthly mag, I love their expedition vehicle articles!

Sönke, nice build! Could you make some general comments on the issues fitting an 80 series frame to the 45 body? I see you widened the front fenders quite a bit and did a body lift - was this mostly to clear the larger tires? With more 'normal' sized wheels, would the fender widening be necessary?

Hey Henry,

if you would use 7.5 R16 and Nissan rims you might not need the widening of the fenders. Have a look throug the thread, I posted pics from another german yellow HDJ80/45 build with the Nissan rims and 9.00 tires.(that won´t fit, see pics beow in the links)
I don´t know if you could go without the lift,...but if your are willing to rebuilt some mounts , I think it should work.

Hey Soenke, where did all the pictures go? I looked up this thread to re-admire your great work and was sad to see that the pictures were gone. This has to be one of the coolest vehicles ever built. Great work.

Hi Soenke,

I am actually drawing some sketches for my future build.

Can you tell me more about the operating clearance left between the wall and the roof ?
Did you use some plastic (PEHD) pads (if yes wich thickness and wich clearance left then ) in the corners to help the roof to slip easily ?

Thanks for your precious help.

Man this rig is SICK!!! I'm super jealous! I'm going to have to use your rig as inspiration if I ever get to do a vintage LC build. Thanks for sharing!

-Daniel

P.S. I love the scenic pictures as well!

Sent from deep in the mountains of Honduras using only sticks and rocks.

Gday Sonke

I love your truck mate. It is one of the best camper LC i have seen. I do like the previous pictures of the 80s as well... I have drooled over this thread for the last few hours

I would love to do a 40/80 hybrid myself, as i have a 45 ute and an 80 series, but they are both licensed. In order to do this, ill have to buy another 80 series, de-license the two that i got and keep drooling over your truck... Its all too hard... :censor:

If you were to do this again (and money and time was not a problem) what would you consider doing differently? V8 diesel? Cab and Camper joined together? Side doors?

Casper

thanks guys,

I ám not shure what to change ...

Maybe bulding the cabin in carbon, it will make it lighter about 150kg.

Maybe stretching the frame abut 30cm to have the space with a less wide body an cabin, using tires 9.00 and sleeping head in front,
maybe building new mounts for engine and gearbox, using selfmade shafts...in order to get the frontaxle in the right J4 position...

but every point will have disadvantages for us too...

you´ll find out your way..

Hello from Canada Soenke. Just wanted to say thanks for committing to so many posts and being open to share so much information with fellow Mudders. It's what makes this forum so great. Different folks from different strokes all sharing a passion. I'd love to share some of this with a couple of friends but they wouldn't get the infatuation with the build as much as we all do. Did you and your wife ever do a blog just on your trips? Cheers to you and a very inspirational build and stellar job.

Richard

it is a 1993 HDJ 80 with manual gearbox, changed to 12V alternator and starter from the HDJ 100, australian clutch (like the one from the later 24v 80), copper radiator from HZJ75, 4.5:1 Diffs from PZJ75, HT rallye Suspension, 325/80 R16 Cooper on Alcoa 8" rims, reinforced front axle, 2x about 200l diesel in alu tanks underfloor and 2x about 60l water in V4A tanks underneath the seats......

Really cool. Thanks for the great photos.

They are back. :)

It's already been said 100x, but this just might be the most beautiful cruiser I've ever seen.
