Howdy Folks,
To answer your first question, YES I did a search, no luck.
93 fzj80 150k Bone stock w/pin7
Problem: Every once in a while shortly after startup, I shift into D and press the acc and the engine revs to about 3500 and I go next to nowhere. Reverse works fine but no forward gears. 3 or so minutes of fiddling w/shifter and the tranny decides to wake up and drive. Then three months go by with no problems and It decides to do it again. 4x total, hot, cold and medium. Truck had been idling for five min and did it. Shifter linkage is tight, fluid is fresh and full, and shifts are solid the rest of the time. Is this a sign of worse things to come or a cruiser quirk?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

It might be a shift solenoid. Have you pulled the transmission codes?

>> YES I did a search, no luck <<

Common problem with the old-style trannies in the 93-94 US 80's. It's discussed here and several other times. Use keyword "solenoid"

C-Dan: I saw your posts on the shift solenoids during my search, but didn't think that could be the problem, However, I personally have never torn one of these trannys down so it is definitely worth a check. Thanks for the reply, but I now need to buy a service manual and figure out how to check the codes while I am rebuilding my 4runner starter this evening(solenoid contacts  ) I am relatively sure that the toy stealer doesn't have a manual in stock so this may be a long process. Any way to check the codes without the manual(search pending :D )

I had already looked at that post and it didn't seem like the same problem. The gear choice is not an issue, I simply go nowhere

>> and I go next to nowhere. <<

I interpreted that to mean the truck would move but it took high RPM's and moved slowly. Solenoid may still be your problem as Dan mentioned.

The main reason I suspect solenoids is because a mechanical problem inside the transmission probably would not cure it's self in the manner you have described.

I have also seen one case where a long-time-leaking PHH dribbled coolant all over the connection for the neutral safety switch over an extended period of time and wigged the switch out.

Sorry for the confusion- I do move but I could easily be outrun by a crippled elderly snail-no joke.
Dan

That sounds like the #1 shift solenoid.

Tucker74- you and "the rest of the world" better start saving up for those solenoids for your "bus" trannies! (Sorry, couldn't resist). :)

Rick,

I wholeheartedly agree. It is unnecessary and immature for those of us with the technologically superior transmission to pick on the extensive and frequent problems experienced by those unfortunate guys with the primitive transmission.

I'll join you in refraining from this devisive discussion.

:D

With all the past jabs at the "4Runner" tranny and now with these bus issues I've decided to take the high road as far as commenting on there inferior design.

Wise choice, I see you know which side your bread is buttered on..;)

It's too late fer you......:flipoff2:

Why don't you go charge yer Optima up some....:D

Christo could make a fortune by pushing Optimas and putting a dual battery kit on the market. You got one; you gotta have the other. It would probably pick up your sales of 91 battery trays too.

:(

We better quit messing with the "bus" tranny folks. It might cause their tempers, among other things, to *flare*. :D

 Wow, you newer tranny guys have just created more bad karma than you can shake a stick at with your comments. Alaska, B, Rick, you've jinxed yourselves. Dan and his dogs are gonna eat well. %$#@^
