My local Mechanic quoted me $500 to rebuild my 1978 transmission that was stuck in 3rd gear. Now he said they have to send it to a Land Cruiser specialist in Canoga Park, CA and it will be $3,500 .... I’m new to this, does that price seem correct ?

I'd look for a transmission rebuild shop to ask for a quote. They should be able to fix it, but it is always better to get a few quotes. For reference, rebuilding my t-case cost about $600, with a rebuild kit and shop time.

that seems really high. you can buy a brand new H55F for less than that. I would look for a used tranny and go from there.

Oh no I know all about Valley Hybrids, I was asking about who the OP's mechanic was referencing

Oh, I thought you were referencing Lil John's post.

stock H42 4 speed? shoot buy a good used one for $200 or less and use that.

To give an actual reply on whether $3600 is a good price for rebuilding a basic 4 speed transmission, not even in the right ball park.

My 4l80 transmission that needed a few replaced parts was probably $1k less than that. My NV4500 was in the $1500 range from what I recall.

My NV was like $1500 as well, with a 3rd gear and a bunch of other stuff. $3600 seems extraordinarily high.

where are you in socal, post something in the clubhouse for inland empire cruisers great group and someone there can help you..

UPDATE : called my mechanic and mentioned that the cost seems exorbitant and if he could discuss with the Transmission Shop .... my mechanic FAILED to mention that they are also rebuilding the Transfer Case ... I think that makes the quote a little more in line ?

EACH unit is about $600 parts and labor with standard rebuild kits, so that’s about $1200. Hard parts are of course extra. I just finished rebuilding and delivered a ‘77 T&TC for a customer yesterday. I could put you in line, but yours wouldn’t be done until after the end of the year; I just took on four more jobs yesterday. 😓

And thanks for the mention Scott @SW20 .😊

@1978FJ40project The further I read this thread, the less warm and fuzzy I feel about your mechanic. Why are they needing to rebuild your transfer case when the issue is with the transmission being stuck in 3rd? You could just about hire a flatbed, have it shipped to any one of several great shops in California, get a rebuilt transmission installed, and have it shipped back to you for that money.

Your mechanic is making money as the middle man.The specialist is charging the mechanic to rebuild the tranny/transfer-your mechanic is tacking money on top of that cost and passing it on to you.

Cut out the middle man.$3500 to rebuild is way high.
