Transfer Case Speedo Double Seal Writeup / How To

Sean, I think you got it.

talked to mudrak, I think I probably did not machine this correctly, sent my drum to him to look at and he will be sending it back with one of his double seal speedos, will post up to see if this solves the problem. I am thinking though that I took too much metal off. I should honestly have just waited and ordered a housing from Mudrak (he was out of stock), not worth all of this trouble. I am sure if you are careful, this can be done correctly at home, but for $65, plus $8 shipping, it is just retarded to do it yourself. But sometimes I can be a real retard.

There are 2 different Tcase brake shaft diameters, with 2 different corresponding seal diameters. I would get out a claiper and measure it and make sure you have the right seal combo.

Huh?

Please elaborate on this.

From 1963 to 07/80 the rear output seals were all the same, 90311-45001.

I think I am confused. One of the Cruiser's I owned, I turned down the brake drum hub to a seal size 1 down from the OEM size. But I thought the reason I picked the seal size was that it was OEM on a later assembly....

no, I think I got the right seal, I am just an asshat and machined it wrong (I hope), I will know when I get the speedo and drum back from mudrak, FWIW, Gary @ mudrak has been very helpful and I appreciate that very much.

got to get it running asap, or the HOA is going to have a s*** fit on me, they are old and super grumpy...

Even if you machined it wrong for the inner seal (don't think you did) and oil is leaking past the seal seat, the stock outer seal would stop any oil from coming past it. Got to be something else...

yes, I must of machined it wrong and messed it up. I called mudrak and he fixed up my drum and sent me a new double seal unit, bolted it up and no problems, so lesson learned (for me at least), just buy it from the experts and if they are out of stock, wait.

Ok... Still don't get why the outer seal didn't stop any oil from the inner seal? Guess I'll run a small bead of silicone around the seat on my inner seal before buttoning it back up just to be sure!

honestly, I think I took off too much metal. I think my "circle was out of round after I machined it causing the seal hole not too line up very well on the drum. Also, take into consideration that my drum was fairly messed up, mudrak looks like he turned the seal surface on my drum and also possibly added some metal? as it looks wider. I think if the seals are just a tad bit off it makes all the difference.

Before you tear anything apart again:

Chock the wheels, put the truck in neutral and release the parking brake.

Get under it and grab the parking brake drum and try and move it up and down, side to side, like you would try and check for a bad pinion bearing or other bad bearing on a power shaft.

If there is any movement, either the nut is loose on the parking brake drum retaining the drum to the transfer case main shaft, or, you have bearings that do not have proper pre-load on them, which is allowing the main shaft and consequently the parking brake drum to run out of a concentric rotation, and wobble, allowing oil past the seals.
So is .0002-.0005 to much movement ? Seems like there should be little bit...

pic 1 - all the parts that are pulled

pic 2 - the speedo housing stock with removed seal

pic 3 - the speedo housing, I pulled the speedo gear sleeve thingy so it would not get gummed up when grinding off the lip

Gday
I'm trying to pull out just my speedo sleeve to check on the plastic gear. If I undo the bolt which holds the locking plate into the groove on the sleeve, should the entire sleeve then just pull out or do I need to more? I didn't want to force it and do any damage.
cheers
