My transfer case is leaking a bit. Not much - just a few drips on the concrete when I park for a few hours. How expensive is the fix on this if I do it myself / someone else? And - is it critical enough to run out and do it right now or can I wait? Thanks

Really depends on where it is leaking, the rear output (park brake drum) is probably the most common, pretty easy to fix and cheap ($10-$30).

If it is the rear output seal, check your parkbrake drum (seal surface) for excessive wear, if there is, use a speedi-sleeve over the drum or find a cleaner drum.

For what it's worth, I took my FJ40 to ToyCar care. He said my tranny and transfer case were leaking slightly. He said what needed to be done is to replace all the seals in both and that would cost about $900. He said once you spend the labor to take them off and open them up, you might as well replace all the seals.

He also said that I could just make sure the fluid levels are OK and drive it indefinitly. Being frugel, I picked option 2.

$900 is WAY steep for a gasket and seal overhaul... with bearings, still pretty up there...

A general T/C gasket and seal replacment, more around $250

If it's leaking between the tranny and xfer case (common problem) SOR or Man-a-fre used to sell a kit consisting of a tube and some fittings that equalized the fluid between the two. Ran like $50 IIRC.

It all depends on where the leak is coming from. If it is dripping from under the EBrake, that is your culprit. I did the speedi-sleeve thing and it wasn't enough. Hated the oil on the garage floor, so, for a few dollars more than a speed-sleeve, I bought a new EBrake drum from SOR. Leak is gone. AT LAST!!!!!

Mine is leaking from right where the Crossmember ataches to the t-case... any ideas??

I did the Computer work for Toy Car Care in Denver.. Those guys are expencive, but they are toyota specialists and thats why, they know there stuff!!

I take it you are running the Advance Adapters rear crossmember?

Depends on what style you have, either way it should be one or two gaskets... some used a one piece crossmember/cover design and some used the crossmember in conjunction with the OEM cover.

The may be Toy specialists but they are still over-priced $50.00 worth of parts, $850 labor... :D

it not that steep. The labor is around 8 hours so say $520 in labor and $50 or so in gaskets and $50 or so in seals, lock nuts etc...
