At some time I might need to rebuild my tranny.
If that day ever comes:
Is it worth rebuilding over getting a new one?
Can one do it in their garage?
Does it need lots of SST?
How long can a rebuilt one last if they do a good job?

I thought about this as mine was shifting late in reverse. Found a place on the web that sold the kits for around $300.00. I figure if it comes to that I might try it myself. I've got the factory manual for it and it would seem doable as long as you keep everything nice and clean.

I have to beleive new trannies are really expensive.

What was included in that rebuild kit?

Toyota ofRichardson also quoted me $300 but that was just for seals and gaskets, cluch and friction plates where a item to item order.

BTW where on the internet did you find this info?

there's one for sale on ebay, though I think it's for a 3FE --

-- not to sounds crazy, but when I switched mine over to Mobil 1 ATF, things changed A LOT on both 80s -

In my case the delay and chatter has gone. But then again I also re-geared which takes alot iof stress out of it when running 315s

Did you do the M1 fluid change or did you have a tranny shop do a fluid exchange.

The price I was quoted from all the dealerships I called was around $6000 !

I had a lot of shifting problems until I hooked the throttle cable back into it's bracket. That was free fix :) .

It also was run that way for about 60K. I Love my 80!

I had a fluid exchange done at the dealer with whatever they use. Then drain and fill every 10k with M1. I've done about 4 or 5 of them so far.

OK shoot me, but I don't have a service manual and I thought that 93=> used mercon transmission fluid.

So if you're using M1, I assume thats Mercon V and not Mercon III, or am I totally offbase and the trans uses Dextron? I've only used Mercon III the basic stuff, so I don't know the differences between Mercon III/Dextron III?

I thought it used dextron, I use M1 as do many others on this board.

M1 ATF did me for the better -- drain and re-fill -- did it myself -- do it from time to time when i'm really bored --

:D
