For numerous reasons, I am thinking about getting a PTO generator to run from my tractor and a transfer switch for power backup. There are a few that look really good - Winco, IMD are two makers for example. Does anyone have any experience with them? I really don't see a downside to using one.

Also, for those versed in power current, if the generator is on and powering the whole house, what happens when power is restored from the electrical company? How does the transfer switch work and does it alert you that power is back on? Is there an audible/visible alert?

The only safe way to do this is to set the switch up so that the line and generator CANNOT BE CONNECTED to your panel at the same time. If you are connected to the line and running a generator you put the lineman who is working on the problem at risk.

A quick google showed that Generac makes a manual transfer switch that sells for Around $200

yes, the whole idea of the transfer switch is to make it safe for all. I certainly don't want to put the lineman in jeopardy and want to do it by the book. My electric company mandates a transfer switch - not sure if they specify auto or manual- but I don't know how it works when I am running the gen and power comes back, hence my original question.

My transfer switch and generator only power the most necessary circuits, not the whole house. When the lights come back on in the living room, I know the power is back on.
