Dear All,

I want to change my transmission oil/ATF (for my auto HDJ80) and I am told Toyota have their own branded ATF which is best to use but very costly, any suggestions?

Also want to drain the Diffs and put in new Oil, I presume I can use any SAE 90 Gear oil?

Thanks

I get toyota ATF for stupi cheap I thought they (Lexus dealership) made a mistake so I bulked up I got it for $2.50 a quart

We have a discussion in the faq. Any atf that says for gm prior to 2006. Some will say replaces dexron III. Gm wont allow the name dexron III to be used since dexron VI came out, which has lead to a lot of confusion and made labling difficult.

Thanks Guys,

Local Toyota dealer tells me rear diff uses different oil as its LSD? Sounds wrong, please advise.

As for AFT they say there are different types, is DOT 4 correct?

Thanks

Also is it safe to use flushing oil (for the engine) of such an old car, i was told it can mess things up in an old engine

Thanks

Some JDM imports have LSD differentials. If they put LSD additive in the gear oil it would not harm an open differential.

What does the owners manual specify for ATF? I suspect it says a fluid meeting the specifications of the Dexron II or Dexron III standards. FYI Dexron VI fluid is backward-compatible and may be the only Dexron spec on the shelf because it has superseded the old specs.

DOT4 is a brake fluid specification.

No benefit unless engine is severely sludged, and I doubt yours is. Possible consequences include reducing the motor oils's lubricating capabilities to the point that it harms the engine.

Has anyone used toyota's t-IV fluid in their transmissions?

Thanks for the responses, workshop manual states use Dexron II so will try to get this or a later Dexron, as for the Diff, will go with LSD oil in the back just to be sure

im curious about this also.......apparently over on the Lexus LS400 forums people say this is a Mobile made fluid to a higher Toyota spec for the Lexus trannies.

Well of course the Lexus guys would say that just to feel better about the money they spend.

I changed out my torque converter and Flexi plate (it was cracked) when I did the rear main seal. We just grabbed some containers of a Dexron III replacement fluid from Castrol.
Still going strong.

You are going to want to use the LSD oil or you might get some chatter out of your rear end. I don't know how often it happens on a Toyota but when I worked at a dealership we used to get Tahoe's in all the time where people used the wrong oil in vehicles with LSD's and they would destroy themselves. Tahoe's had problems all around though.

The AW transmissions used in the FZJs are not finicky. Any Dexron II or better spec will be fine. For post 2000 cars, the transmissions are much more sensitive to fluid, but those AWs were designed around good old Hydramatic fluids. That being said, I use only the Honda branded stuff in the wife's car as the transmissions in Hondas are notorious problem children.

If it makes you feel better to use stuff in Toyota quart bottles that costs 5 times as much as gallon jugs of major oil company Dexron from Tractor Supply, go ahead and do so.

I wouldn't worry about "flushing" your tranny. Just drain and refill (4 quarts). I use Valvoline Syn ATF.
