I noticed on several Land Cruiser reviews, mostly on YouTube, that many of the newer Japanese 70 Series are sporting a V6 petrol engine. My question, does Toyota produce a number of 6 cyl. engines or is this engine basically the same one that's in the newer Tacomas?

The engines are different. The non-US 7x trucks get the old Tacoma engine: 1GR-FE been around for a long time. Same engine the FJ Company are utilizing on their builds.

The newer Taco engines for the US are a derivation of the car engine: 2GR-FE modified for truck torque.

I guess I should raise the hood on my Tacoma more often. :) Kinda hard to see with that big "Klingon Battle Cruiser" sitting on top of the engine but they indeed look similar.

Well, if you weren’t able to tell from my previous post, the engines are of the same family: the GR engine family. Toyota is very logical in naming convention.

So yes, they are very similar in terms of engine family and design.

But, in actual operation, the engines are far different. The 1GR-FE being put into non-US LCs (7x/200), are way different than the 2GR engines being put into the US Tacomas.

There are differences in terms of HP and torque; there are differences in terms of whether the engine is mated to an auto transmission or a manual transmission, there are differences in engine management; there are differences in axle ratios and all sorts of other platform specifications.

Very similar to how Boeing and Airbus build similar vehicles with different power plants: Pratt/CFM/GE/ and how each platform has different ways of making money.

I was totally befuddled until you mentioned that "airplane stuff" but now I get it. :)

I'm one of those weirdo purist so no V8's for me.

Toyota makes the new 70 series with Diesel V8s.

But I think a lot of purists (like me) would rather have a nice low klm HDJ78/79 with the 1HD FTE with front wheels spaced the same as the rear. Like this police car. 4.2 litre vs 4.5

It’s one of those things, if you have never tried it you have no idea what you are missing. Or in other words, once you try it you never go back. :)

I work on diesels all the time, I own a very nice 95 80-series with a bad engine. It’s getting a v8. :p

Cheers

VDJ79?

EDIT - Damn, should read the whole thread first.

@roscoFJ73 I'm with you on the 6 vs 8 thing, @Indestructible 47 gets better fuel economy with his FTE than I get with the 1VD and it ain't much slower if at all.

Only thing the 6 is missing is that beautiful rumble

I'm assuming that we'll never see the V8 (the one made by Toyota that goes clack-clack-clack, not the one made by GM that pulls up to the unleaded pump) in the U.S. so discussing it is both fun and frustrating at the same time.
