In case everyone missed this note on ToyoDIY:

6 December, 2009
The diagrams are no longer available on this site. For reasons that are beyond our comprehension, Toyota Motor Sales Inc. kept harrassing our ISP about them. It seems that they are really interested in quick profits from new car sales, so it is in their best interest that old cars fall apart asap.
The progress of course cannot be stopped, and the diagrams are available on numerous other websites around the world, so we feel this change will not have any significant negative impact on Toyota DIY-ers.

Contact us if you need help or have any other question about this change. Extra info for registered forum members.

At ToyoDIY, we strongly believe in our right to repair our own vehicles. You can help by raising awareness of the issue. Details can be found at RightToRepair.org - Right To Repair Coalition 2009.

What a freaking joke! Does it really impact Toyota's dealer sales to show up at the parts counter with PNs in hand? I know that parts guys appreciate it. I made my last big order with Dan, but it's nice to pick up little stuff locally. Sadly the average parts guy isn't as sharp as Dan, making it a sometimes frustrating experience. Baffling is an understatement, I don't see how this hurts Toyota. Only the consumer.

As I mentioned earlier it's an intelectual property issue.

I don't need no stinkin' spel checquer.

:flipoff2:

No double L in liquor.

I hear what you're saying, Dan, but I respectfully disagree.

Toyota North America is shooting themselves in the foot, because those of us who are inclined to bring in gray market vehicles WILL find a way to buy parts, albeit with more difficulty. We'll buy from Canada or OZ or Europe, wherever. TNA loses the sale.

As I said before, I think it's all about discouraging the gray market in any manner they can. They (and most other auto manufacturers) lobbied congress mightily back in the late 70's to early 80's to get these draconian import-restriction laws passed, in response to the flood of gray market vehicles coming in back then.

TNA may offer the "intellectual property" argument as reason for yanking the images, but I think it's pretty easy to see through that BS.

If their corporate philosophy was more friendly toward gray market, they wouldn't have disabled all non-USA part numbers in their system, and they wouldn't have disabled images on toyodiy.com

Our litigious society is also at fault. TMS USA, like all large corporations, has a fleet of laywers that look for ways to "protect" the company. If they bring in and sell an item that was not originally intened for and tested for and certified for this market it could be argued that there is an implied "certification", or warranty, or whatever, that does not actually exist. The bean counters do not like the potential liability.

Here is an example:

Let us assume that TMS USA "allowed" an Austrailan sub tank to be imported into the US and said vehicle was subsequently involved in a collision and said tank caught on fire and burned the truck (hopefully less occupants) to the ground.

Who do you think the plaintiffs' lawyers would go after?

I'm just sayin'......

Why not make it easy, if US customers want to buy non USA parts make them sign a waiver. That would be a win-win situation for both TMS and customers. Makes perfect sense that way.

Just my 2 cents

Where's Aticus?

He'd be the first to tell you waivers don't mean a thing and can be vacated just as fast as they were signed.

Dan beat me to it. Waivers arent worth the paper there written on. You cant sign away your rights. Any half decent lawyer will win any case for the plaintiff when he "signed his rights away".

Will

Okay then maybe we all should move down to Australia or South America.

Let's cash in our 401k and social security checks and retire early :D

This is available from Toyota NA. Both CDan and gotmud can get the parts for you.

And altogether, the prices are reasonable.

You know who to contact.

:)

Ohhh, I thought I read somewhere they're no longer available?

If you mean a money issue, you are correct. Toyota isn't one giant "borg" like we see on TV. There ore tons of different divisions, and if one division wants to protect the diagrams and another realizes the great PR and sales tool the diagrams present.......sometimes it just comes down to whose office is the closest to the boss.

Call it what you like. They own it, it is not in the public domain. If they choose to protect it we have no defense.
