Towing with a 200-series Toyota Land Cruiser (12 Viewers)

I've never felt the need for anything additional. I use the wireless camera on the back of the Airstream as a supplemental view but the factory mirrors are pretty large and I can see to the back corner of 27ft of Airstream. FWIW
 
My pontoon boat is 8' 6" wide and I need the telescoping extension mirrors on my 7.3 Excursion to see around it.
 
Just finished this thread over a week or so of browsing. What is the best tow mirror for the 200? If there were a OEM quality telescoping replacement with all the bells and whistles I'd get that. I think the replacements are not Toyota quality so I don't mind hanging a bolt, strap, snap or duct tape on tow mirror but want the known best.

There are OEM telescoping mirrors available from Australia but they are manual and lose the power adjust and defrost functions. Nothing that does both

Clearview USA told advised that these will fit US spec LC200s. In particular, the version that has heat, BSM, power fold, turn indicators, and will accept the cameras removed from our existing mirrors. Very pricey at around $1100 US per pair
 
@catastrofe Thanks for pointing that out. I missed that they had BSM first time I read through their website. I don't mind spending $1100 if they have all the bells of the OEM and are solid quality like you would expect on a TLC. The Dometic type looks like a second best option. I would lean toward Dometic if I can not lay eyes and hands on the Clearview version before ordering. Or at least an in depth Youtube video showing fit and finish.

I saw posts/video showing horrendous quality issues with the Clearview option. Bubbling and peeling paint, IIRC. Do your homework before dropping the cash.
 
Thanks for the heads up Woof. Their latest version has BSM and looks like molded hard plastic with no paint. Easily looks the same quality as the ones on my Excursion, which I can't tell from the latest SuperDuty tow mirrors. I still would like to see them in person before dropping that change.
 
Hey can any of you towing experts confirm that I bought the right stuff today from Redarc? I searched here and I think I got the right part numbers, but am just curious as I'm a little under the gun to get this brake controller installed.

I purchased the Tow-Pro Elite Electric Brake Controller and the Toyota suitable Tow-Pro Brake Controller Harness (TPH-021). Hoping this will all just plug in. I went on etrailer but got confused as they had one kit for vehicles with the towing package, another kit for vehicles without it... did we all get the towing package? My 200 already has the receiver hitch, and 7-pin connection in back. I just need to power some brakes.

Also I have an extra 7-pin connector harness if anyone needs one... total idiot move I ordered it then when I went to install realized I already had one... and by now I've tossed the packaging and it's too late to return. hit me up if you need to plug in some lights!

Tim, I know a number of people did the splicing thing using the Toyota-provided harness. But since I was lousy at splicing I simply ordered the TPH-021 and plugged it in to the proper plug on the Land Cruiser. One end plugs into the Redarc Controller. The other into the plug. Plug and play. No splicing necessary. If you haven't found it somewhere I saw a pic of where to find the "socket" to plug the car-end of the TPH-021 in. On my 2016 I removed the Tekonsha harness that had been plugged into that socked as that was my first brake controller and then plugged the TPH-021 into the same spot. Worked great. On my 2021 there was a "dummy harness" plugged into the same spot and wrapped in orange tape. I removed that and plugged in the TPH-021 from my 2016 and voila.

As for the switch blank, I don't remember the part number but what I have is the same as @catastrofe.

This is what I have used for 5 years now. I have two sets. One I keep in our travel trailer. The other is in the garage ready to put on when I tow trailers for a local charity. Oh, and if you are wondering, yes you can fold in your mirrors with these attached. ;).
 
@Dan Higgins thanks for that endorsement. I ordered a pair for now even if I decide to get the Clearview at a later date.
 
Agreed the Aero 3s work well. First time installing them is a bit finicky with all the adjustments. After dialing them in, subsequent removals and installs couldn't be easier.

The power fold side mirrors help tremendously. After walking into the side mirrors more times than I can count, as they stick out well over 18", I now make it a habit to fold the mirrors anytime I'm out of the car. Sure, they auto fold when I lock the car, but I don't always lock the car in various campgrounds.

RV shops are easiest.

I’ve ordered my trailer tires online (once off eBay and once off Amazon) and brought the tires and wheels to my local mechanic, which changed them out. But I had to put the truck on jack stands to get all 4 off.

big thing I recommend is to make sure your new tires are at least M speed rated (81 mph). Not sure how fast you drive but older tires are only rated to 62mph believe it or not.

I stepped up from C to D load as well so I could run higher tire pressure but you may not need that buffer. Also as you’ve now seen change your tires every 5-7 years because they will deteriorate.

my recommendation for tires is Carlisle but YMMV. Not a fan of Goodyear given all the issues they’ve had with their (larger) RV tires, and I’d hesitate to run generic brands

I’m setting up a new hitch and I’m thinking of modifying the shank to be shorter. Is there any reason I would not want to shorten it? I would be moving the ball about 2.5 inches closer to the bumper. Not a huge movement, but every little bit helps I believe.
here is a crude markup of the shank. I would slot the old hole to insure no one tried to use it.

Reasons not to shorten? Very little IMO. Perhaps clearance for the tailgate to tongue jack, or other clearance concerns?

The pros and positive knock on effect to stability, proposing, sway, are all predicated on optimizing this geometry. However subtle that might seem, 2.5" is akin to increasing the wheelbase by 5", with the 2:1 wheelbase to rear overhang ratio of our 200-series. That's a solid improvement to maximizing our limited wheelbase.

My little HF bandsaw took awhile but did the deed.

Did some searching and lack of results lead me to post here. Who is monitoring a camera mounted on the back of their TT? I'd like to be able to monitor a camera on the rear of my pontoon boat and another low on the back of the truck where I can see the six trailer tires. A dash cam in the mix would be nice. Some dash cam's can monitor multiple cameras but I doubt Bluetooth nor wifi are going to reach the length of the LC200 and 30' of boat trailer. eTrailer.com has several that say over 100' range but they look like they would be home in a tractor trailer, not a TLC.

One of the features of dash cam's is gps and communications via cell tech. I already have that with the Compustar alarm remote start and Drone Mobile connectivity. I'd rather not have multiple gps trackers and would also rather have one cell service for linked devices rather than 2. Lot's of precision operators in this thread so I figure someone here has a similar setup. Ideas?

Edit: I think I am going to have to split up functionality. The rear monitoring needs to be real time rather than taped review after the fact. Backing up into parking or a boat ramp plus seeing if some jack weed is about to plow into my Bravo 3 outdrive. I will use this only when towing so the extra monitor is not in the way normally. These Furion systems from eTrailer seem to have the range needed. For the dash cam component. They all seem somewhat weak.

We have been searching for the right trailer for the family for some time and stumbled upon a Grand Design Momentum 21G today. It would seem to fit the bill in many ways, but it is heavy and i am doubtful of being able to pull it safely.
You can see the specs in the screenshot, I would estimate around 7k with batteries, propane and any other minor dealer add ons. If I use 12-13%of gross to determine tongue weigh, I am faced with 850-900lbs before water or gear. doing the math based on payload rating, that would equate to 1655capacity-900tongue- 425people= 330lbs of payload left for water and stuff

Seems like too much for a 2013 200 series right?

I do have e rated tires, progressive springs and bags in back, but concerned with not having any safety factor here…

obviously the GVWR of this unit is predicated on having a “toy” in back, which we would not, but I would expect to boon dock on occasion and that would require bringing fresh water in…

I know several of you tow at the limits of the truck and so curious if anyone thinks this safely feasible? TIA!

Too big and heavy for the LC/LX once you put any stuff in it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe these mirrors are without the auto-dimming feature though. While expensive, I would fork out even more if they had the full suite of factory features built in.
