Hands are tied. Limited recourse. Like golf, a handicap through a system that holds them back from dominating a playing field. At least that’s how I saw the pot stirring comments that rang true for my past experiences with the juvenile system, the state, and biological parents. Good times I will never relive in this lifetime.

Ah I see, thank you for explaining. I was struggling with reading comprehension a bit there.

Back from the cliff....

Haha!!

"I have friends in law enforcement and one who is a school resource officer, and i can tell you 99% of them will tell you that they are handicapped as well"

What?

My apologies, very incomplete thought. yes what @Comet said. They have a job to do, but are very limited in how they can respond. Law enforcement officers are trained to deal with the worst of the worst, not children. I mean you can't just roll in and taz a kindergartener when they "resist". They are basically having to serve as the first disciplinarian that some of these kids have ever encountered. Its just a very different environment then dealing with adult offenders.

Nah. I haven't really budged in any direction. Just wanted an explanation so I highlighted what I was confused on.

I still think it was inappropriately handled start to finish, and do agree it mostly fell on the school, failure wise; but still find handcuffing an eight year old to be inexcusable.

I personally don't think they have a place in schools, either. But don't disagree with you on the pressures they face - and as you're pointing out, they do not always have the appropriate training for these situations.

Anyway I just want to check out from society entirely so I have nothing else to add to this convo. Gonna go melt into nature now. 😂

P.S. I edited the original post to hopefully avoid future confusion...

And i 100% agree, checking out sounds like a great idea to me these days as well

Not trying to stir a pot, but this was clearly a breakdown on multiple levels. Unfortunately I know many teachers who deal with students with this type of discipline issue. Not saying that this child wasn't being properly managed on his plan, but im going to be honest, many children are failed at home first, they are not disciplined and then are sent to a school where they have no respect for their teachers or administrators staff, and then when they are disciplined, then the parents cry fowl and it is the staff and police who are the bad guys. In this case it appears the primary breakdown was the school, not the officer. I know he is 8, but he did strike a teacher and, unlike when i was growing up, that teacher can't just grab him by the ear and tune him up, their only recourse is to call the authorities to "handle" them. I have friends in law enforcement and one who is a school resource officer, and i can tell you 99% of them will tell you that they are handicapped in their ability to respond. Trained to deal with adult offenders, not lippy children. The fact that we now have to have uniformed officers in schools should tell you that we have an issue. I don't remember ever seeing the police at my school, unless it was career day or field day.

I read the article and watched the video (no sound so I couldn't hear tone, which may be very important), and not knowing what happened before or after, the officer seemed to treat the boy with respect and a light hand, was it necessary, no, but the school should have handled it. When he got taken to the office, the admin should have said, "oh yeah he has a special plan, sorry we didn't tell you. We will take care of this" By the time the officer got there, he had his job to do.

My opinion, parents don't want to deal with their unruly child, but instead of reinforcing the consequences of his actions, they are suing the police and school to "make a point". If my kid gets arrested for hitting a teacher, she will spend the night in jail/juvi so we won't have to have that conversation again..

Are there power hungry A-hole cops, sure, hell there power hungry A-holes in every occupation, they are just all out in the public these days. I apologize for the lengthy post, but most of them are just doing their job.

As a person who has lots of family members in the education sector (mainly teachers, some administrators) I can agree with most of this. Its amazing how many times a kid can go nuts, causing the teacher to have to take all the other kids out of one classroom.l to be looked.after by another teacher or administrator while they take however long it takes to calm that child down where its safe to bring the other children back in. They can't physically touch the kid even if he is picking up things and smashing them etc....

My sisters class had this happen to them on a weekly basis until covid took care of the classroom issue last year. She used to go home dejected because her normal six or so hours of teaching time was cut down to 3 or four that day within of the things used broken. Etc....

However my family will be the first to tell you that there are also a ton of bad teachers out there than cant handle the regular kids let alone the fringe ones.

Our education system as a whole needs a major overhaul.

our entire way of raising children needs an overhaul.

First thing, get the government out of it, everything except the 3 Rs.
No reason a parent can't feed their kid, provide a backpack and shoes, teach sex ed, encourage fitness, and bathe them each day.
We need to revert back to personal accountability.....and watch many of the countries ills disappear.

I kept hitting like repeatedly but it could not get my excitement in one place. That sounds wrong. I’m just going to like the comment once.

The MyChart app is useless if the person responding to your questions only answers some of them. In theory, it's a brilliant way to communicate with your doctor/staff without an in-person appointment, and where they are able to see your communication in writing (even with pics!) vs a note written by the receptionist when you phone in. In practice, my experience is that the people responding can't seem to recognize that 3 numbered simple questions require more than an answer to just one of them. Perhaps they just love presenting us doors, hoping we'll pick the one with the tiger behind it.

It's times like this that I miss David Smith.

My experience with my chart has been great but I imagine like anything its all down to the place you go to.

I miss David's posts also.

I miss him for the reason, In the day and age that your not allowed to have an opinion it seems, David always said what I was thinking. @JohnVee did you get one of his cutting boards? Wonder where his 40 is? ..... random thoughts....

I'm pretty sure his 40 went to a friend as specified in his will. Can't remember where I heard that but it was someone that was talking to his family.

I just saw it in high point one eve last week at dinner.

Oh man. One of my favorite phrases to say at work... (or is it least favorite phrases to HAVE to say?)

RTFE!!!!

Read The F***ing Email!!!!

My boss has a really annoying habit of asking me questions that I literally just answered if he would have just RTFE that he is responding to when he asks the question. This also leads to some passive-aggressive responses that begin with "As I mentioned below....."

That's passive-aggressive?

Feels like it technically is, but I'd say it's totally excusable. Maybe you're not reading it quite as smart-assedly as I'm saying it in my head as I type it, with a ton of emphasis on "MENTIONED BELOW (!!!!)". :grinpimp:
