Too much rust?

If I was specially LC hunting I would. But really I just want a large reliable v8 suv for under $10k. There’s an ok 100 in York PA. Asked for a Carfax because they didn’t post one up.

This is going to sound odd in a LC forum...

Don't get an LC.

Because most of the good ones are $15k+?

Because if all you're looking for is a V8 SUV under $10k, any 100 you find, regardless of price (especially cheap, though), is going to require more of you to keep up to snuff than it's going to be worth. If you wanted it specifically to do LC things or just to have one, then sure, it would make sense.

These are old trucks. Things are going on them. Parts are expensive and if you're not doing your own labor, so is that. What labor you might do will be time consuming. You can buy a truck that's super clean, but it's still going to need a lot. Check the "100s are expensive" thread. It's not to say it's not worth it for most people here, but most people here are enthusiasts specifically for the LC or the type of stuff you can do with it. If you're wanting an appliance, these won't be it.

Well to put your response in perspective I’m coming out of an 04 Land Rover Discovery on which I did head gaskets and timing chain

So half way between an appliance and a Land Rover is where I’m hoping to end up. More equal distribution of reliability and character. My disco was mostly character

Oh, well if you're coming from a Disco then yeah, you're on the way up. Carry on.

Just be advised that even a clean 100 is going to take some loving to get into spec. Plenty of guys here with $2-10k trucks with no rust that immediately put another truck's worth into it for base-lining and deferred maintenance. Definitely still check out that other thread I mentioned. And the FAQ.

Sequoias have the same engine and trans, and is lighter, bigger, and a lot cheaper. You won't get the legendary status that we have, it's an elite thing. You'll still get the reliability and crappy gas mileage though. Unless you really want an LC, i'd get a sequoais, there are tons more of those for sale than 100 series, go find something down south with 4x4 and bring it back.

Ok. There’s a dealer near me that has an 05 sequoia limited and an 04 Yukon xl Denali. Might make it there this weekend and see what I like

Also sequoias use traditional brake master cylinder, that costs less than $90 for parts, whereas the 100 series use the electrical pump/solenoid/booster thing that costs a couple grand. Pads and rotors are standard too, not captive with the bearings, so labor is a whole lot easier. It's much cheaper to maintain a sequoia than 100, parts are also cheaper. Something to keep in mind, i wanted the 100 because of the way it looks, and its nameplate, if i didn't care for those, i'd rock a Sequoia all day long.

Sequoias are fantastic. This is a good recommendation. Everything on Sequoia is easier to maintain and your standard shade tree mechanic need not have a lot of specific knowledge to knock out most issues.

There are quite a few very nice examples I've seen around my local area in the 7-10k price range.

Thanks. I won’t give it any more thought. If he emails me back I’ll post it

there are some sequoias for sale near me. I assume if I like how the LC drives, I’ll like the sequoia?
Had a new 2004 sequoia 4wd. I like my 125k 2003 tape deck havin rusty lc better. I liked my sequoia a lot though, might try to grab one as my dd

LOL I was going to say something similar.

Also, holy hell what a ton of rust that car is. I wouldn't buy that at any price. Is part of the gas tank supporting metal just completely rusted away in that first pic??

$10k Land Cruisers are expensive to maintain, but who cares? :) a new-ish truck costs so much more money and I don't trust that they are any more reliable. Buy what you feel good about buying.

Well I think I found the one. A rust free 07 gx470 local. Drove it, liked it, price is right. Thanks for steering me away from this mess

Rust free local GX in your state? Post pics, I don’t believe you man.

i know right? Since this one looked good, I didn’t take pictures. But when I go back to get a PPI (Toyota dealer next door to the place selling it) and hopefully buy it, I’ll take some pictures. I should close on the sale of my expedition and discovery over the weekend and barring anything bad, have this in my driveway next weekend

first owner serviced it at Lexus of queens. Second owner was PA. Then that guy moved to CT I guess
