I'm doing my knuckle rebuild on my 97 fzj80 now and when I pulled out the axle the tone ring fell off. This happened last year and I had a mechanic replace it. When I put it back on it just slips all the way down with nothing to hold it there. Birfields are 2 years old. Any idea what could cause this to happen? Also which way is it supposed to go back on?
Thanks

The tone ring is held in place by a press fit, the press fit on your's is just worn out, so now it just slips on, and off with no pressure. As to which way the tone ring goes on, i think it makes no difference which way the ring goes on. You can reuse the tone ring you have. You just need to clean both the axle, and tone ring real well with some brake cleaner to remove all grease and oil from the surface where the tone ring sits. Then put some Loctite 620 on the surface where the tone ring sits on the biff. Next put some Loctite on the inside surface of the tone ring, then slide the tone ring back on the biff, allow the Loctite to dry for about 24 hours before reassembling the axle. If you ever need to remove this tone ring you'll need to use heat, lots of heat, like from a Map torch applied directly on the tone ring to break the Loctite's glue like bond.
Here are 2 links to info on Loctite 620 retaining compound.

Also, it installs with the more concave side toward the bell. The ring will be flush with the flat area on the front of the bell.

Use a center punch and dimple the area where it mounts like @LandCruiserPhil suggested. 8-10 dimples, relatively evenly spaced around the circumference of the bell mounting area should be sufficient. Then tap it on with a hammer.

Thanks everyone. My birfield ended up just getting warrantied so that saved me the hassle of having to mess with the tone ring

Don't forget to transfer the tone ring to the new one......
