I've been reading a lot about de-smogging and the threads I have read run the gamut. From good improvement in power and mpg to zero improvement. One guy claims his is running worse.
I'm running a new-to-me '91 3-FE with 243k. My first LC. She was running like dog**** when I got her and I have base-lined many items using OEM parts including all of the usual tune-up items, OEM vacuum hoses and more. She was purring like a kitten for a few days and now I'm noticing a bit of a lope and occasional erratic idle.
Now, I'm not entirely sold on the De-Smog procedure, as I don't want to cause any unintended consequences. Yet it makes good sense that this "added" system could be robbing me of some mpg and power. Furthermore I'm still not running at an ideal idle and one of the major tune-up items I haven't done is a new EGR valve assembly. Well, Toyota has discontinued the EGR Assy and I haven't had any luck sourcing an after-market EGR valve. What if the EGR valve is what is causing my current idling issues? It would make sense to delete it....right?
Another question I have is: should I also remove the smog pump? Will this help my Cruiser or is there a potential harm or unintended consequence? I've also heard some people voice concerns about running a shorter belt with two pulleys rather than the factory set-up of a longer belt on three pulleys and how this may compromise the alternator. I'm assuming their concern would be added stress on the alternator by increasing the directional pull of one pulley?
So I guess I could have just asked, should I delete the EGR assy and get rid of the smog pump or is this going to cause me some issue down the road? Anybody with experience with this, or mechanics and engineers, please chime-in. Maybe @jonheld has the answer to my question?
