Ok, so I am very 80 ignant :hillbilly: and a gentleman asked me if I would trade my 40 for this 80, now I would think his 80 +cash for my 40, as the 40 has 430 or so miles on the new 5.3L motor, plus the 40 has been rebuilt from the ground up and I don't remember seeing any 80's going for near what i'm asking, no matter what has been done to them.

Just wondering what the local 80 owners think this 80 is worth.

I dont know Tony, I think you could buy a nice 80 and build it for thousands less than what I think you may be able to get for your 40. The difference there is that the popularity of a nicely built 40 is far more fanatical than an 80. Ive seen your 40 and it is definetly a A+ build.

At the same time (devil advocate here) you have mentioned to me that youd like to spend more time wheeling vs. building...you then have to consider what your time is worth and the 80 is already done for you. (The Inkpot theory :D)

How many miles are on the 80? Is it local and have you seen it yet?

If you want to go 80, go for it Trade + cash. Wheel in cozy comfort :grinpimp:

Without seeing/knowing the rig, it's hard to say what it is worth. For my uses it has way too much stuff tacked on. The '80 is a heavy rig, the more stuff it is carrying the less nimble it becomes. But that would be a intended use decision? Where is it, where has it spent it's life? If near IPOR, my first question would be, how much rust? For me to even consider it, the answer would have to be zero. There are too many nice rust free rigs here, wouldn't even consider importing a rust bucket.

That 80 has all the bells and whistles for an expedition style rig. There's a ton of $$ in there.

A straight swap would be up to you. IMO, you could probably get more for your 40, but theres a good 15k+ in stuff on that 80. If you paid 5k for a decent 80 and did all the same stuff + maintenance stuff you'd drop somewhere near 20k more. But, do you want an expo style vehicle or more of a wheeler?

The resale value on the 80's tends to be low. IMO, he could get 15k if lucky.

mountian cruiser you described a 80 that I think a friend of mine in memphis has built.

It is one of the nicest 80's that I have seen built and he has done everything correctly on the truck.

i don't think either would be disapointed.

btw I am not just tread crapping. I am in the process of moving to PHX area and went riding over the holidays with Kevin and others.

I am sure I am forgetting other stuff. IPOR has done most of the work and you can talk with Cam on it. It is an awesome 80. i really want to build a 40 but, the wife told me I have to either get rid of my 80 or my BMW M5.

I have about 45k into the 80 between parts and labor. It is a very capable rig and can run expo work all day long and then turn around and do 4's with ease.

Let me know if you're interested or if we could work something out.

Cheers.

Value of a stock 80 plus 1/2(or less) of the value of the stuff/farkels you would want/need would be the way I would value it.

Also there is no glory in owning someone elses build.

Thank you all very much for the responses. I want one to wheel and camp out of, but not so much flog it in the washes like my 62. The only plus is it's built already and I could sell some of the stuff I wouldn't use to generate some more cash. I would like to build one myself to have my hands on everything being changed to make sure it was done "right" (very relative term) but I don't want to spend the cash to buy the parts he has, and if there is a problem it is always easier to track it down if I did the work versus the possibility of it burning down cause of a $1 wire fire like what Audio Express does. (home of the $1 wire fire):D

I also want to add that i'm starting to get 80 envy in case you haven't noticed.... Always knew coils are the best, but still love the 60's, 40's, oh hell I like them all, 55's, 45's, etc etc...

Howdy! This is a complicated issue. First ya need to look over the market and see what a realistic sale value is on the 40. The value will probably increase the farther north and east you can market it. "Arizona rig" has a certain premium on the value. I think the 80 values have gone up a bit from a couple of years ago. In my search for an 80, my priority was No Rust anywhere, lo miles, clean inside and out, service records. Factory lockers came next since I am used to (spoiled) by having front and rear lockers on my Piggy. I used an 800 mile search zone, and I found a lot of them out there, pretty stock, in the 5-10 thousand range. As Phil said, add-ons are worth about 50% retail, IF you want them, otherwise, you can sell them off to the expedition crowd. The super charger is a nice toy, but here in the desert the heat factors reduce it's value. If we had gotten into this discussion Saturday nite at supper, we would probably still be there!! I'd be glad to get together and chat about my experience in shopping/choosing a rig. John

John, I will take you up on that offer, as you may have noticed I can talk too much at times so it could become a very long conversation, maybe start early. Very interested in an 80 and if I can take it in trade plus a bunch of cash on my 40 it would be even better as either way I need to build another 40 or 2 after this one is out the door.

I also wanted to say I liked the decals on your 80, almost seemed similar to the 80's pickup graphics that i'm fond of.

Thanks, I had caught your posts around here (CSC), and it is nice to hear that from a local to him mud member. I am just trying to get top dollar for this 40 and it might be better for me to sell mine outright and buy an 80 that is being sold closer to the lower end of the price spectrum without all the bells and whistles so I have more capital to build more 40's or a 40 and 45.

I understand...

I am glad to see another 62 out there to wheel with when I get in town.

Comments from the cheap (aka Blazer ... :)) seats:

Don't make a 1-truck issue (i.e. sale of your '40) a 2-truck issue (your 40 vs. his 80).

The ad for the 80 to me basically reads as nothing but lot of hot air.

Besides, the guy spends $45k on his truck, and now wants something else. Doesn't that mean that despite all the money spent, the truck isn't all that and a bag of chips? Why would you want that truck?

I dunno, man - that 80 sounds pretty trick. You're not going to get close to that for $15k, but you've probably got more than $15k in your resto too.

Tony,
I agree. I know what it takes to build a 40 like you have. I hope you can get the $$ you need out of it. I also know that that can be a challenge and you have to be patient. I think Phil said it a while back, you have to be patient looking for an 80, too.

I don't think you would be happy with someone else's built 80. When I'm on the trail I like knowing that I put every bolt on my rig. You are young, mechanically-inclined and obviously talented.

Follow your conscious and you will always end up in the right place.

DSRTRDR & fumann do you guys read thread titles, "To all the 80 owners out there." = not you guys!:o:hillbilly:

Also there is no glory in owning someone elses build.

I didn't think there was any glory in owning an'80?

It's only worth what someone will pay for it in all reality right? I don't mind sitting on the 40 cause it makes me smile every time I drive it (and it has 100% mojo :D), just no more rock play type runs, cause I like hitting my toys on obstacles sometimes even rubbing fenders. :hillbilly:

So can I not read this one cause I don't own an 80 either:D (is that the smartass smily)

I would say the deal appears to be viable. The problem I see is that you don't seem to know what you want. Until you figure that one out, there's a big risk that you will be disappointed.:hhmm:

I would get some further details and do some soul searching.:grinpimp:
