This is the the official 2024 Rubithon Thursday Breakfast Morning thread.

I am looking forward to meeting you all on this years trip. My name is Doug, I will be leading the run this year with my co-driver Dominik aged 19 and my 8 year old daughter ( 7 year Rubithon Veteran) Isabella.

I have driven this trail a bunch of times in a both a mini truck and in my 80 series. The 80 I will be driving is setup in a pretty typical fashion with 3" of lift, 35" tires, 4.88 difs., low t case gears, front and rear lockers, all the requisite armor, dents, winch, snorkel, fridge, tools.

This will be a traditional Loon entrance to the main Rubicon Trail. This unique run has a pre-paid private breakfast at the Ice House Resort before we start the trail. The breakfast is scheduled to start at 0800. We ask that we all get there early as in 0700 so that we can do the the tech inspections and insurance paperwork early and be able to hit the road right after breakfast. If you are not at Ice House by the time breakfast is finished we will be moving on. If you are not at Loon Lake by 0900 we will be moving on. If you arrive late and feel comfortable on the trail by yourself feel free to hit the trail and catch up.

There are a few "motel room" cabins at the resort, some RV spots and a tent camping area. The rooms are way rustic but "OK".
I usually fuel up at fresh pond on #50 before the turnoff to ice house road. Topping off at the pump at ice house resort is not a bad idea (be prepared to spend $10 a gallon). Topping off at Ice House and driving straight through and exiting at Tahoma I have never needed to dip into a Jerry can. I always pack a 5 gallon Jerry can just in case I have to drive the full trail back out due to the Cadillac Hill exit being closed (due to fire or lots of snow).

Our first day's destination will be Buck Island Lake were we will camp.
On group runs like this we will be taking the easier lines and getting everyone there safely. With a sizeable group it is important to keep things moving and stay in our rigs for short stops. a prepacked lunch is a great idea. I will do everything that I can to get us there early enough to have some down time and a swim before dark. With this years snowpack, I would expect a full ice cold lake and not a muddy pond full of stumps like previous years.

Friday we will continue on to Rubicon Springs where folks will typically scatter and find a camp spot. At that point the official group run is complete and we are all on our own for camping. Groups often stay together to camp and some of us will do that but it is not required.
Sunday everyone mostly exits up Cadillac Hill, there is a local 4x4 club, the Hi-lows that provide assistance.

The Rubithon signup page will list mandatory safety and recovery gear that you will need, as well as equipment requirements. Minimum tire size is 35's and a 3" lift, you should have serious armor and a strong passenger to stack rocks doesn't hurt either. If you have not extended your axle breathers yet this years wet conditions might be a good excuse.
Make sure a heavy strap (no hooks on the end) and a fire extinguisher are readily accessible. I like the strap on the passenger floor board so I'm not hunting for it or dealing with a swing out bumper while in a precarious situation.
I will walk around camp and offer a wrench so that everyone can check their knuckle studs before during and after each day on the trail. If you are driving an 80, I do have some tips for mechanical preparation, sway bar advice, etc. I do carry specific parts for an 80 series such as a steering box, birfield and all the parts to repair a knuckle/studs (minus the actual knuckle), tie rod ends, rear drive shaft and a spark plug repair kit (don't ask).
We will be using 2m Ham for our communications, most likely 146.400. I recommend obtaining a license but don't let that stop you from picking up a radio. I have Baofeng hand held, they are inexpensive. I have a file (chirp) that can be uploaded to the radio which I can share ahead of time. It is very easy if you have a sync cable.
If you have made it and read down this far. ;) It would be nice to get to know each other a little better before joining up on the trail. This is a good place for introductions, to ask questions, and get answers.

Hi there - I signed up, but may switch over to this run if possible? I need to depart thurs instead of weds, but want to do it over 2 days.

This is a good run to take then. Two years ago I hiked up from the springs to take some pics of this run coming down Big Sluice on Friday morning.

Excellent overview Doug, thanks for 'stepping up' as Trail Lead.

For those new to the event or a Formal Run, the comments about departure time might seem harsh but are spot on. Doug has to get his group into their planned camp areas on schedule. He will have 10 to 20 trucks and yet is only one of many groups all traversing the trail. He cannot stall the entire group to wait on one truck. Plus, you don't want to miss breakfast!

Additionally, his comment about staying in your truck are also spot on and reflect his years of experience. If everyone gets out of their truck at every stop, it can take forever for each to get back it, drive up and tackle the challenging area, then wait around for the next driver to walk back, get in their truck, drive up, etc. Stay in your truck unless actively involved in spotting or stacking.

There will be plenty of photo opportunities throughout the entire weekend! Going to be a great time!

Thank you Doug for all the knowledge you shared. My name is Rocky I will be joining you on the breakfast run. This is my first time running the rubicon. My brother and I will be trailering my 69’40 from Montana.
We are planning on camping at ice house resort Wednesday night, do you know if we need to reserve a tent spot?
When you are talking about insurance do I just need proof of vehicle insurance?
Can’t wait for this event I can’t stop thinking about it but also have a lot of wrenching on the 40, currently the transmission and t-case are out and I’m installing lower gears and a twin stick.
Looking forward to meeting and wheeling with everyone!

Looking forward to meeting you. Just a card for the insurance. Usually there are plenty of camp spots at Ice house resort. My son and have been building a 1971 FJ40. Can’t wait to take it on the trail but we still have drum brakes, manual steering, course spline pinions, stock t case and open diffs. Maybe next year.

That sounds like an excellent father son project. Hopefully you can have it on the trail soon. My 40 was already modified when I got it. The previous owner had the roll cage, 3FE motor and H55 transmission installed. Last year I put 3.5” lift with 35’s 5:29 gears front and rear chrome alloy shafts up front arb lockers front and rear and a disc brake conversion in the rear. Just got word today from George at cruiser brothers that my gears and rebuild kit for the transfer case are on there way. Lot’s of work left to do!

I got officially switched to this run. Looking forward to it. How many people are signed up for it?

About a dozen. What’s your name and what are you driving? Have you driven the trail before?

Chris Kreidel. 95 80 series. 3x locked on 35s. First time. Sounds like a nice sized group, not too big.

It should be fun. I assume you have stout sliders, bumpers and t case skid plate. If you have not reinforced your front sway bar axle brackets you should be ready to unbolt it from the axle (unless you have a bracket to disconnect and pin it up).

I have full armor. Bumpers, sliders, and just got skids to install, waiting for powder coat. I have front sway bar disconnect. I think I should be good.. just need to worry about the nut behind the wheel :)

I have a spare FZJ80 series rear drive shaft. Definitely a part I recommend be carried for your specific model. Those are photos of two shafts that I have destroyed. I now have an extra heavy duty re tubed shaft and a heavy duty re tubed shaft as a spare.

I'll be there this year, but I'll be riding with your gunner. Looking forward to the trip! wish i was bringing my 80.

I’m OK with a crowded swimming hole as long as it’s not crowded at the normal breakage spots (like the pinion snapping ledge in the granite bowl for example).
