I like the bypass to the left, it’s a little tight gettin up on it but it’s way better than the bounce, bounce, pop deal.
The bypass is a good spot to bash a door if your driving a wagon! The spot on the right just gets dug out and it’s so slippery.

Almost time to pack

Sorry to report I will not be joining you guy’s for the rubithon this year. Waited too long to start rebuilding this transfer case. Found more worn parts that had to be ordered and even if I get everything installed in time I won’t have enough time to give a proper test. Last thing I want to do is throw it on the trailer and hit the trail only to break something and ruin the trip.
I have rolled over my entry so I can definitely make it next year.
Hope everyone has an excellent trip!
Cheers!

Bummer, That being said, I do appreciate proper preparation. A broken rig/trail repairs is not everyone’s Idea of a fun trip, especially when we have a large group to move through. Look forward to seeing you next year.

thank you for acknowledging proper test prior to the event... nothing more ... interesting... that someone who rebuilds the entire drive train and then tests it at Rubithon... where everyone else has to then fix it properly.

Good on ya! See you next year, or at one of the upcoming runs such as the swap meet or McGrew Trail Ride in Sept.

Hi Doug

Looking forward to seeing you again. This will be my 3.5 run through in my 1971 40. Connor and I really enjoyed the last adventure and now he has a license!!

Since the last time, 2022, we have another locker new RCVs and 60 knuckles up front with a new stereo which will definitely help me ignore any rubbing noises.

Thanks for the updates. See you next week.

Michael

Brown Bed lined 40? Aerodynamic as a brick?

Had no idea. I’m actually a week early. I’ll let ya know how it is.

This is the the official 2024 Rubithon Thursday Breakfast Morning thread.

I am looking forward to meeting you all on this years trip. My name is Doug, I will be leading the run this year with my co-driver Dominik aged 19 and my 8 year old daughter ( 7 year Rubithon Veteran) Isabella.

I have driven this trail a bunch of times in a both a mini truck and in my 80 series. The 80 I will be driving is setup in a pretty typical fashion with 3" of lift, 35" tires, 4.88 difs., low t case gears, front and rear lockers, all the requisite armor, dents, winch, snorkel, fridge, tools.

This will be a traditional Loon entrance to the main Rubicon Trail. This unique run has a pre-paid private breakfast at the Ice House Resort before we start the trail. The breakfast is scheduled to start at 0800. We ask that we all get there early as in 0700 so that we can do the the tech inspections and insurance paperwork early and be able to hit the road right after breakfast. If you are not at Ice House by the time breakfast is finished we will be moving on. If you are not at Loon Lake by 0900 we will be moving on. If you arrive late and feel comfortable on the trail by yourself feel free to hit the trail and catch up.

There are a few "motel room" cabins at the resort, some RV spots and a tent camping area. The rooms are way rustic but "OK".
I usually fuel up at fresh pond on #50 before the turnoff to ice house road. Topping off at the pump at ice house resort is not a bad idea (be prepared to spend $10 a gallon). Topping off at Ice House and driving straight through and exiting at Tahoma I have never needed to dip into a Jerry can. I always pack a 5 gallon Jerry can just in case I have to drive the full trail back out due to the Cadillac Hill exit being closed (due to fire or lots of snow).

Our first day's destination will be Buck Island Lake were we will camp.
On group runs like this we will be taking the easier lines and getting everyone there safely. With a sizeable group it is important to keep things moving and stay in our rigs for short stops. a prepacked lunch is a great idea. I will do everything that I can to get us there early enough to have some down time and a swim before dark. With this years snowpack, I would expect a full ice cold lake and not a muddy pond full of stumps like previous years.

Friday we will continue on to Rubicon Springs where folks will typically scatter and find a camp spot. At that point the official group run is complete and we are all on our own for camping. Groups often stay together to camp and some of us will do that but it is not required.
Sunday everyone mostly exits up Cadillac Hill, there is a local 4x4 club, the Hi-lows that provide assistance.

The Rubithon signup page will list mandatory safety and recovery gear that you will need, as well as equipment requirements. Minimum tire size is 35's and a 3" lift, you should have serious armor and a strong passenger to stack rocks doesn't hurt either. If you have not extended your axle breathers yet this years wet conditions might be a good excuse.
Make sure a heavy strap (no hooks on the end) and a fire extinguisher are readily accessible. I like the strap on the passenger floor board so I'm not hunting for it or dealing with a swing out bumper while in a precarious situation.
I will walk around camp and offer a wrench so that everyone can check their knuckle studs before during and after each day on the trail. If you are driving an 80, I do have some tips for mechanical preparation, sway bar advice, etc. I do carry specific parts for an 80 series such as a steering box, birfield and all the parts to repair a knuckle/studs (minus the actual knuckle), tie rod ends, rear drive shaft and a spark plug repair kit (don't ask).
We will be using 2m Ham for our communications, most likely 146.400. I recommend obtaining a license but don't let that stop you from picking up a radio. I have Baofeng hand held, they are inexpensive. I have a file (chirp) that can be uploaded to the radio which I can share ahead of time. It is very easy if you have a sync cable.
If you have made it and read down this far. ;) It would be nice to get to know each other a little better before joining up on the trail. This is a good place for introductions, to ask questions, and get answers.

Hey Doug,

My name is Guy and this will be my third trip in my 97 5sp 4Runner. I have 35’s, a crawl box and full armor. Looking forward to another great run. Thanks for the introduction on this blog with expectations and rough schedule. It’s quite a difference from last year’s breakfast run. If you have any particular recommendations for a 4Runner I would be happy to hear them. See you up there.

My name is Michael Kunz and this will be my first trip on the Rubicon trail. I have dreamed of doing this for around 30 years when I first purchased Jazmine. Jazmine is my 1974 FJ40. Finally moved to the west coast and got the courage to sign up for the Rubithon this year. I will be driving with my 12 year old son Joshua. My rig is mostly stock aside from: 33" KM3's with shackle extensions, ARB lockers front and rear with disc brake conversion as well, low 1st 4sp Toyota transmission with Atlas transfer case and low low range gears built by Georg, and a little rust I picked up along the way in NC. I will be towing Jazmine to Ice House Resort with Shasta, my 2018 URJ200. Thank you for reaching out by email as I had missed this post earlier. I look forward to meeting you all.

Have a couple questions.
1. How do I prepay for breakfast the first morning?
2. Can I park Shasta, my tow rig, at Ice House resort for the few days we are on the trail?
3. Do I need advanced reservations to camp at Ice House Resort the night before the ride? Or is there primitive camping near by?
4. How much cash should I bring for Rubicon Springs Saturday event? I understand this is optional but just looking for a range?

As far as Cash that is kinda up to you . Do you want to purchase more raffle tickets ? Maybe an extra t shirt? Bar on Friday night and the one we all hope we never need if you break anything and need parts . I would say 250 would be good . You can park your tow rig at ice house. It is 10 dollars a day

Breakfast is already paid for. We had some cancellations so I think you are covered (or you can pay cash.
It sound like your 40 is mechanically sound but with small tires and no armor your body is likely to be damaged. With the amount of rust I see in the photos that may not be an issue for you.

Body damage is expected. I have been looking into replacing the tub and want to run the rubicon before I do.

Doug,

My name is Charlie and I will be with son, Tyler. I went last year and had a great time. This will be Tyler's first Rubicon run. We will see you on Thursday morning with a green 80 that is comparable to yours. Looking forward to it. TIA

Charlie

My name is Chris, first time Rubicon. Bringing a neighbor/friend along with me. I have a 95 80 series with full armor. Getting my offset/clearance dialed today..

I was planning on dropping my tow rig off Wednesday night at the Tahoe side staging area.. any reason I can't/shouldn't do that?

Also - is there a decent amount of shade where we will be camping? Thinking I could ditch the 270 awning if so.

There should be plenty of parking at the Tahoe staging area. I’ve never trailered to the Rubicon but I see a lot of tow rigs parked there. Shade is important at the springs. A lot of camp spots are on exposed granite (and a lot of the shaded spots will be taken by the time we get there. I run an awning, a cheap Chinese awning that is tucked in tight and has some scuff marks on it from the trail. There is a good chance you might damage your awning on the trail as it appears to stick out quite a bit. Here is photo of mine. It tucks in behind the snorkel and is no wider than the snorkel (and cost less than a $100)
