Please tell me your reception you get with that antenna set up. b/c I might go with that instead. My last quote was from beig an ex-USMC Sniper and Navy SeAL, and then working with Blackwater, Acadeia, and the Dept of Justice. Workig freelance around the world now and letting the body heal from alot of hard years. In the SeAL'a we prefer NOT to wear Purple Hearts b/c of what I said

I have the TJM T-13 Front bumper which has two Antenna mounts on it, I would love to put a Firestick on it and connect that to the FM wires. IF that is even possible. Since I am not a radio reception guy nor a radio FM guy i Don''t even know if the two are compatible. But I really like the mount you had on the side of the hood. I just hope you get great reception. If not then I think we will need to add an amplifier to the antenna to get us a farther range or mount an antenna higher (which causes problems) which can cause some problems depending on where you are off-roading, etc

You dont say. If you wouldnt have mentioned Xe I would have thought i was communicating with Wasdin H. LOL
So -if you dont mind me asking- where did you put in for MOS0317? And where were you sent after Quantico?
Its funny bc I too did some work w Xe WE MIGHT EVEN KNOW EACH OTHER! my originad MOS 0321

Sorry, for all the Q but these days you know, anyone w internet has become a SEAL or somethin'
Hey perhaps-since you put in work around- this may help situate each other:

Sorry for the hijack of thread!

Back to antennas lol. Yes i will give a full report.

@B3A5T if you can post a picture or two showing installation! I'm looking to replace the OEM antenna and if this works good for you I may go that route also. I don't have a snorkel to work around so if I were to replace it, would I still need the bracket you ordered from Gamovite? Would I have to get a different one or none at all? Can't wait to hear how it goes!

@TheForger

For sure! Im just waiting on the bracket to arrive. So far the antenna I ordered (Dual Mar16B Marine Flexible) looks good. Its spring mounted, short and very flexible. The only thing i wish it offered is the capacity to be folded flat. Plus, as i mentioned earlier, the cable seems short. Easy fix with an extension. As for what I dont like about the setup: its not going to be as clean as drilling and mounting on the fender bc the base of the antenna will be exposed given the characteristic of the bracket. Given that the bracket is stainless steel unpainted I may paint it black (as well as the mounting hardware of the antenna) to make it look "like a one piece" once mounted. Otherwise I think its alright. It gives the LC a rougher look IMHO you YMMV.
Ill post as soon as i get it mounted.
Thanks for the interest!

Just as an option I was looking at -(for those who dont want the antenna showing bc of looks or bc it ca get caught on a branch etc).-
Jensen Marine AN150SR AM/FM Amplified Antenna
@cj007sd mentioned that he bought a flat antenna to mount behind the rear view mirror and that gave me an idea.
Im playing with the idea of routing one and attaching it to the basket. Going out the dash, under plastics of the passenger side, to the B pillar etc .Just like mounting lights. Running the antenna perpendicular to the crossbars. This is on a 80 tho.
Just a thought.

Update on mounting the antenna:

Bracket came in. Be advised that it will only bolt to a specific bolt. I wanted to mount it closer to the original location but the way the bracket was made the holes will not align. Nevertheless the piece is solid and perfect and it bolts securely. I like it.

As for my original purchased antenna....DIDNT WORK (Jensen Marine). The base was too long and was hitting the fender.

This is the part (silver) that was too long and was hitting the fender preventing me from mounting:

Solution:

Went to Autozone and bought one with a shorter base:

Havent painted the bracket and base black bc I want to make sure it works. otherwise Im returning it. Antenna is flexible and amplified so my hopes are up.

Comparison:
Notice the length after the legs. To use this bracket you want a short mast.

This is the one I bought:

Hope this helps

That's perfect! Very detailed. Let us know what kind of reception you get off that antenna. That will be my next purchase if it all works out.

@cj007sd

Man you probably went thru SQT years and years ago bc you would remember the difference between FM and UHF.
Here:
UHF (ultra high frequency) receivers are able to detect different kinds of radio signals in the UHF band of the radio frequency spectrum. FM receivers are used to decode frequency-modulated broadcast radio signals no matter where they fall in the radio frequency spectrum.

Key words are detect and decode. Frequencies aside of course.

Couldnt help it and went ahead. Its not plugged bc I need an extension but I dig the result so far.

Ill post my final result tomorrow after I buy the extension. Including a non scientific test on radio reception plus one of engine RPMS vs Speed comparo pre and post Snorkel.

Cheers

Very good job, I like the look of it. What do you think about the location? Appears to be a good foot and a half from the original antenna location.

Hey there, I just re-read your post. I wouldnt go this route bc you would have a hole in your fender or two antennas (oem not working and then the bracket one) . It would be easier for you to order a replacement (powered if you want) or not and just swap antennas. The only reason IMO to do the bracket is if you loose the ability to use the stock location. Thats up to you of course. In essence you dont need a bracket just take off the oem antenna and buy a replacement. The cable runs from it into the firewall at glovebox level. You will see the antenna cable just unpug and plug. In my case it was necessary to remove the tire (I have 33's) to gain access and remove the plastics under the fender to gain access. But if you have enough space to unclip and wiggle the plastic out theres no need to remove the tire.

@B3A5T What about these clips I hear people talking about in the fender? Some say they have gotten them off easily while others have said they've broken them (most likely what I'll do). Can I just buy extras at Autozone or will I have to custom order them? Thanks for all your help!

Mine come off easy. So far these week they have unclipped and clipped twice. One for the snorkel and one for the antenna. Pretty sure youll be able to find them easily if they do break. I would buy a couple JIC and have them around, they have to be cheap.
check this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/antenna-install-questions.355373/
BTW if you are going to do this take advantage that you are already by the cabin air filters and change them. Its has made a difference for me.
Heres how: https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/lx470-cabin-air-filter-replacement-diy.39995/

Update regarding rain water accumulation:

After two days of constant rain (the news said we got 8-11 inches of rain) and me driving up and down the tollway in heavy rain (several times 35 minutes each time for maybe 6 times) this is what I found in the airbox:

image_zps12ce026e.jpg

Notice that i plugged the drain hole (blue gum looking thing).

Filter was nice and dry:
image_zps5b8b5002.jpg

I dried as best i could with a towel and i removed the "plug". A friend of mine from South Africa came by and he said they mod the box there. He recommended using a dremel to cut the grid (because the box is slanted to drain but the plastic grid prevents it) making a channel for water to reach the drain plug.
He also suggested making the drain larger and carrying a plug (HomeDepot) to attach when (to use his word) I go in the Bush lol.

image_zps4c39ce25.jpg

Notice the drain hole is tiny, Im thinking of getting the type of plug that looks similar to ear plugs like the battle plugs and just using them when needed. I will post for those interested the end result of dremelling the grid.
Plug looks like this

I replied to your email but never got a reply from you. I preferred us discussing our professions via email to email and I thank you for emailing me. Did you not receive my email or did I say something to upset you? I thought we had some interesting things in common that were non- land Cruiser related. But in case I said something to offend you - I finally installed the Snorkel and installed one of those in cabin Antennas that you stick to the inside of your window behind the rearview mirror. I supposedly bought one of the highest rated on AMAZON and my reception is close to ZERO. SO I am back to the drawing board and I think the only way to do it is to mount the best brand antenna for FM reception (I don't know what brands there are to choose from) and then I think I need to mount that antenna as high as possible w/o over doing it. Some have said a hole through the roof for their HAM radios. I would prefer to copy your set up) and therefore NO holes. But if it gives me the very best reception than I will drill a hole IN FRONT of the Sun Roof and close to the front Window, Therefore I will pray that it will be a clean hole and I am not drilling through something important or cutting a wire that is important. If anyone out there can think of a possible problem I would have with this PLEASE let me know. I can drill it starting from the far right side (passenger side and make a hole anywhere along a line from the far right to the center.
So B3AST if you are getting reception now and would recommend your setup than I just need to know EXACTLY which metal holder you suggest I buy and as for the antenna, I will copy you again unless you think I should look into buying an antenna made for FM reception and one that has more height. I am asking ALL these questions b/c I wasted too much time and money installing the first antenna which will be in the trash can after I figure out with 100% certainty that this 2nd try WILL work. As for the metal holder what do you think about us mounting our antenna to the metal piece that is mounted high on our snorkel? That way we would both have more height, have a very stable metal piece to work with, and then just need to attach the wire to our antenna of choice and that combination to the snorkel metal holder.
Thank you and I look forward to you emailing me again in regard to this and our jobs. cj007sd@me.com. I think in your email I didn't receive YOUR personal email and only the Forum's reply website and maybe that is where you did read it or didn't. Sorry but have been gone doing some refreshing training. CJ

In spite of Amazon ratings, stick-on antennae are notoriously crap unless the antenna is designed for the vehicle...e.g., the diversity antenna on the inside of the rear window on the passenger side.

Best non-amplified antenna is simply cut for the middle of the FM band, about 31 inches long. Best AM reception comes with a longer-the-better antenna. Easier than punching through the roof and trying to fish a cable through the headliner might be mounting an antenna on the driver's side...mirror image of the mount location on the passenger side.

THANK YOU for the magic number of 31". SO my plan with your approval is to run a 31" antenna (or as close to that number as possible, since they seem to be sold in 3 feet ((36")) or 4 feet.) that runs vertically, and I will mount it to either on my front TJM Bull Bar which has holes for mounting HAM radio antennas or I can run an antenna half way down the hood with a metal bracket that sticks out of the hood.

I learned this from one of our members B3AST and he also posted many wonderful pictures. So my plan now is to go with one of those two options.

Saying those stick-on antennas are crap is using a very kind word. Mine will be burned in anger and a wasted $30+. I don't want anyone else to waste their money on one of these Chinese made pieces of plastic trash w/ a 4" metal wire. For a minute I thought of buying a new head unit and maybe that would help but it also gives thieves something to see and want to break in and steal. THANK YOU again for the 31" number and if I understand you correctly the height of the antenna does NOT make a difference when it comes to FM reception OR should I also try to get that 31" antenna as high as possible?
This can't be as difficult as a problem since I had perfect reception with my stock Toyota powered antenna and now I have ZERO reception. This isn't rocket science but it has be dumb founded.
If anyone else out there is in the radio business or has helpful hints on how to get reception after installing an Snorkel I would appreciate it VERY much!!
THANK YOU AGAIN HanKinid - you really helped me out A LOT

You're welcome, bt I was off a bit...should be ~28 inches...see http://www.csgnetwork.com/antennagenericfreqlencalc.html

I doubt you'll see a major difference. In theory, the higher the better. IMO, I don't think I'd whack a hole in my roof to gain a bit over the height of a fender. I'd still consider an automatic or manual Toyota antenna mounted mirror-image on the driver's side. I cannot believe a snorkel wasn't pre-designed to accommodate an antenna...maybe cut into the snorkel a bit so the oem antenna will go back on, and fair the cut with a bit of sheet abs or a big wad of rtv...

Steve, and semper fi back at you. Nephew is a major in NC in 3rd ANGLICO, after 2 years at NAS Whidbey (sp?) Island teaching folks to fly in especially crappy weather...he's also Force Recon...the kid loves abuse.:cheers:

@cj007sd

Hi again! You are correct sir,I am not from the US of A but I was trained here. First attached to a Marine Unit and then sent to Brown Water in Coronado. From there you know the drill. Im old now lol and my last hoorah! was in San Pedro Sula Honduras. I was a green badger (DEA intelligence) until the collapse of the US budget. First furloughed and later done. Tried to send a pm on this but like I sated on email I cant figure this forum out.

Lets get to the good stuff!
I strongly recommend the Gamiviti mount
http://www.gamiviti.com/html/products_antennamounts.html

I like it a lot, the mistake I made was not telling the installer of the snorkel that I wanted to use the antenna cable. He cut it and I had the stereo people try and connect the cable of the new one to the the power antenna relay (not sure exactly where) that sits behind the glove box.
http://tlcfaq.com/main/2012/05/cabin-air-filter-installretrofit/

Well it kinda works when Im in the city, not sure what to blame. The connection or the short crappy and cheap antenna I bought from Autozone in a rush to try the mount.
My next step is to have the antenna cable connected to a an extension and plugged directly to the head unit. I havent cared much bc currently Im streaming from my phone to the head unit whatever i want. But I know not to rely on it.

My personal opinion on mounting high and dry is the same as the Five "S" principles of camouflage: In this case im concerned with silhouette: Having it sticking so high outside the shape of the car may be an issue while on a trail=break the damn thing. But thats just an opinion. Using the mount I bought you can go pretty long and still be within the roofline plus it sits abit inside the fender and you can see it from the drivers seat. YMMV Of course you could buy a spring mounted unit.
I would still stick to the rule that you always walk 5 to 10ft off crest peak lol

HEY! I just remembered: about the inmate comment.
No sir im not or was ever lol. Its a comment made bc this forum=asylum (we are crazy to keep dropping $ on the LC when its a great tool the way it was designed ) and users are the inmates of the asylum. Thats all.

Cheers mate lol
Ill post my results but please post your too bc chances are youll have a better solution.

STEVE
First of all since most antenna I have looked at are either 2' or 3', does that mean I but an Antenna which is 24" or 36"?? 2" is closer to the "magic" number of 28", so therefore the 2' or ?? THIS problem which out of ALL the issues we have with our Land Cruisers which are important I am devoting hours and hours on a stupid FM antenna. DOES anyone in the RADIPO world know if I new head unit would solve my problem. I al in the market for a new head unit, so I am not THAT crazy to buy a new head unit ONNLY for the FM reception. I was thinking of getting a double-DIN with Sirus radio buttons built in and possible navigation system built in (expensive) But I will die before I sell this Land Cruiser -- this will be buried with me in the ocean along with the Land Cruiser! I am 100% serious. I will make sure someone takes a pictures to send to the magazines. Flag draped coffin rolled off the pier. PERFECT

Awesome to hear about your Nephew - Please give him my best from one brother in arms to another.. Since I was USMC and NAVY (long story). Everyone is different but I hated N.C. Camp Legeune going through USMC boot Camp and a medical course all in the winter months. Also NO offense to anyone out there but I was born and bread in southern west coast beach, who could swim before I could walk and I spent every free minute of my childhood in the ocean or a pool. N. Carolina was not my type of city. But then went from doing LONG heavy Hikes at a 3 Degree angle in N. Carolina to Camp Pendleton where the first Friday I was there we went on an "easy 8 mile run with no weight and I got my ass handed to me b/c the mountains were so steep that the Hummers/Ambulances couldn't follow us the last 1/3 of the way b/c it was too steep. Then you get to Afghanistan and we have nothing in the USA to simulate the mountain conditions or height (I know adapt and overcome), so we used Horses with Kevlar saddles, to ATVs, to our hands and knees, that along with no air to breath due to the elevation. The good old days. Other Marines LOVED and HATED San Diego.

I have Good friends that are Force Recon and was privileged enough on my first deployment going on "sneak and peak" operations in Iraq and again in Afghanistan with the Marine Sniper 4 man platoon STA. The USMC are ALWAYS short on money (b/c as your nephew will explain in much greater detail, unless they decide to join SOCOM and instead decide to stay on their own with "special operation" troops than they will not be allowed to dip into the special fund made for only SOCOM troops) You have the ARMY, NAVY, USMC, AIR FORCE, Coast Guard and SOCOM, each with their own budget) that is how as a former SeAL I was able to have a different Leatherman for each of my bags and have the very best and newest gear from R.E.I. Not to mention the gear and weapon systems and even the tactics and schooling were many steps ahead of the USMC (which is NOT fair to a single USMC life or unit, having to fight with your life in stake when there IS better gear and training available) But the USMC feeling has/had always been that ALL Marines are SPECIAL and therefore they don't need their Force Recon, Recon, etc troops to join SOCOM since all USMC (even the guy behind a desk getting coffee everyday is equal to the Force Recon Troops and therefore the USMC doesn't want to say to their fellow Marines that some are more special than others. Your MAJOR nephew can explain that MUCH better than I can since his Pay grade is above mine and HE would point out where I am a little right or a lot wrong. I would LOVE to hear his thoughts on the matter and he would of course leave it nameless since we want your nephew to continue to get promoted :)

b/c the USMC is always short on Top- Notch and trusted corpsmen (a medic in the army) I was allowed to join Recon on some missions in both countries until they could bring in a fellow force recon member with my skills and then some. This was BEFORE I joined the SeALs - and then my medical skills are at the very top next to and the only ones that are maybe better are Special Operation ARMY Green Berets. I tip my hat to them as having more training than I and therefore better. Air Force ParaRescue PJ's Crimson Beret (NEVER the color RED) They are also in our same league as one of the very best medical personnel in the world. If you were in an accident and were NOT under gun fire - I would want either an E.R Doctor and/or one of the three people I ha
ve listed AND anyone that knows the military will agree with my assessment 100%

Thank you for the update and if you have time to spare if you look at the new AIRTEC/TJM snorkel (very aerodynamic and makes my engine completely silent now, does not allow for an antenna. It is a trade off you make by installing this snorkel which so far I give a 5 stars to it (out of 5 stars being the best LOL) I find it mind blowing that some one in our community has not had this exact problem (as this snorkel becomes more popular on 100 series Land Cruisers) and/or someone like yourself that is educated on the length of the antenna. Now I just need to buy and try and try NOT to waste more money to try to come up with a solution. I would prefer if someone smarter than me in this field would say that they had my same problem and "this is what I need to do to get my FM reception back to at least stock) on a side note I was going to install Sirus or another satellite radio UNTIL I learned that you have to turn your FM dial to a specify station to get their Satellite radio. I am about ready to buy 12 D batteries and an old school ghetto blaster and put that on my front seat. This problem CAN't Be this Hard to solve. I ask you fellow ih8mud Gods to send me your wisdom and help me brainstorm & solve this problem. PLEASE.
Sincerely your frustrated and confused Land Cruiser for life owner
