TJM Airtec Snorkel purchase and install

My 1998 LX470 came with a factory-installed cell phone in the top portion of the center console (and steering wheel controls). It has a 3"x3" square black antenna on the right rear passenger window. I removed the phone a couple years ago but still have it somewhere.

You guys crack me up :)

The pass. side vent window - It's an FM antenna that facilitates the diversity tuner in the factory head unit. If you changed your factory head unit you would have seen the second antenna connector. There is no mystery. Lots on manufacturers have this feature. My 2002 Audi allroad for example.

pfran,

Any update on your air-box investigation? I was poking around the hood this weekend, and noticed the exact same thing that you had mentioned (i.e., that the air-box is open to the hood space on the bottom.)

It certainly seems to dash any dreams of running the 100 underwater with only a snorkel sticking out! ;-)

I'm surprised that I had not heard about this much before. Until you posted, I was always under the impression that the snorkel would lift the air intake point to a much higher place, in part to reduce risk or hydro-lock. While I can see the the risk would be reduced with a snorkel, the fact that this air-box allows for water to enter so easily certainly undermines that perceived safety to some extent...

If you got your 100 in deep enough water that the snorkel came into play, hydro lock wouldn't be your only problem:meh:

If you wanted it "water tight", you could fit the drain hole with a plug of some sort that you could toss in when you wanted to do the submarine bit.

As long as you could mount it and modify the MAF housing, you could fit an 80 series/diesel type box easily I guess.

power seems down after airtec snorkel install

Sorry to revive an old thread, but i've got the TJM Airtec installed.. all was fairly easy, although that stupid intermediate hose is useless in its attempt to fit up with any appropriate seal to the 90 degree hose that enters the airbox. the kit had no clamps for this part, which is fine, i have clamps.. but it is not even remotely long enough to make a seal possible. I made a makeshift watertight seal with a homemade rubber hose connector, then alligator clamped it.. also gobbed the crap out of the seal with clear silicone.. actually all the joints are gobbed.. It isn't coming off.. ever..

so the bad news, where the heck did the power go? granted i'm full armoured, bumpered, winched, racked, cargo boxes and riding on heavy open country m/t's (33's), but FRIG it feels like i'm driving an 80 (no offense, i love the 80).. I didn't reallly notice it THAT bad pre airtec, but to those that have installed this, have you noticed this?

note to self, throw in 5.29's this fall when going to 35's..

Mine feels fine....no loss of power, added a little bit of intake noise.

I don't notice a loss in power and the hose was large enough.
Only a pain to install as you can't reach all the bolts.

The intermediate hose/tube sucks. I bought a section of intercooler piping and silicone joiner and reducer to replace the TJM piece. Worked great:cheers:

It is not being pinched when it revs as its stiff plastic tubing. I decided to drill holes below the existing air entry with a 1 inch drill bit; 4 on the back side of the intake, right opposite and facing the air pillar. Seems to have helped but that's just but dyno. the holes end about 8 inches below the existing intakes.

I'll put a screen back there to keep rodents out and that'll be it (not that they could, would or want to crawl back there).

I don't see what all the fuss is about with the drain hole - i think its vital to have it there to keep water moving out should you get some down the intake (from rain/splashing/spray hose when cleaning etc). I had the front of the hood submerged and the water roll back to the front windshield from the bow wave and its dry as a bone down there. Only when i went to the car wash did i get some in the intake tube. no biggie, as it drained out the drain tube.

Me: Honey, I really, really need this for....ummm....the cleaner air it will scoop out at it's higher intake position.

Wife: [rolls eyes]...You are a retard

But, it shall be mine...oh yes...It shall be mine...

I am doing research on these again and you made me laugh......

I had an FJC and bought the Safari Snorkel, waited to install it for 6 months. Defining moment was when my wife said, "you should sell that on Craigs' List cause your not going to install it"

Just previously I had lobbied for new TRD rims, citing they looked more professional than the black aftermarket ones I had just bought.. I know, but I was running out of material..

Anyway, my wife walks by the FJC with the snorkel rolls eyes and says, "oh that looks professional" and walks back in the house..

hahah mine said somethign similar as well. the cruiser started as hers and i gradually just kept adding parts to it until she finally drew the last straw at the dorkel. her comments were something about turning the truck into somethign a hillbilly would like and that's it's fawking stupid looking.

now its mine, i gave her my rs4 in trade.. good deal i think.

re: my previous complaint on loss of power - i pulled that sh*tty factory intake tube and put a straigh piece of 4 inch pvc pipe in there. Waaaayyyy better. feels pre snorkel and unfortunately adds some intake sound.. not a big deal considering i'm used to the audi, and besides, its a landcruiser not a race car.

..

After all the conversations we've had, and all the " stay out of the water" advice you've given me? You're the reason I didn't even go look at the water crossing on the Kokopelli last year.......

It's because of all the dust, isn't it? ;)

Would someone please be kind enough to give me the price of what they paid for the INSTALLATION of their snorkel. I just want to know what a fair price should be, before I pay for it to be installed here in Southern California. THANK YOU

I'm not in Cali but to give you an idea the shop doing mine on Monday is charging me 2.5 hrs at $80 per hr so $200. Well worth it IMHO bc I'm not confident enough to drill my fender. Inch or two in the wrong direction and the thing won't fit properly. Plus I'm going to ask about a 2 way valve in the airbox.
Cheers
