Hey all - Just picked up an 88 FJ62. The car is all stock but I want to put on some bigger off road tires. Was thinking of BFG All Terrains - what size is recommended? Any pics with sizes would be helpful. Thanks!

Tons of threads on this - recommend you search. I have BFGs in 31x10.5, which works at my elevation (7000'). Many go to 33s, but beware that your gearing will change a bit with that much bigger a tire. The stock size tire is ~28" dia. I have very mild rear lift (1" over stock) and front is pretty close to stock.

From personal experience, a 32" tall tire will fit on saggy stock springs, however most shops wouldn't even consider putting 32x11.5 tires on stock 15x6 wheels. I happened to find a set of used 32x10.5 super swampers mounted on factory FJ60 wheels, which was pure luck on my part. As you can see, they really filled up the wheel wells! 31x10.5 is probably a more reasonable choice.

Just installed 255/85r16 Dick Cepek Extreme Country's. Tall, skinny, and old school. They fit nicely on the 16x6 US wheels 8 spoke wheels and drive very nicely on the road. Planning on hitting some trails this weekend to really test them out. I am sitting on 2.5 inches of lift, but lots of folks seem comfortable running them stock.

Another tire size to look into is 235/85r16. They are 31.7x9.3 inches. They won't change your gearing drastically, and there are a lot of options for tires. If you are daily driving with slightly less wheeling, it would be an excellent size that would get you where you need to go. The Hankook Dynapro and Toyo Open Country AT are both made in that size, and they are both excellent tires.

If you stick to your stock rims, 31X10.50 has been thoroughly vetted by many 60/62 series owners for stock height suspensions. 33X10.50 will also work on stock rims, and will fit more or less ok on stock suspension, provided the springs aren't too saggy and you don't flex the suspension too much. The gearing will be a drag on long hills.

Careful, though, because a 62 in stock form is pretty sensitive to gearing and tire size. So go much over the stock size and it will feel really sluggish. This is not a truck with a lot of extra get-up-and-go to start with, and bigger tires makes that worse.

If you're getting bigger tires to go off road, then a suspension lift and 4.88s will let you run 33s pretty comfortably. That would take you most places you would want to go.

i put 4.56 in mine with 33 inch tires and the speedo was 2 km/hr off. 4.88 i personally think are too steep for 33 inch tires. if you upsize your tires you might want to think of an extra tranny cooler as it will put a little extra stress on the tranny and these are prone to failure with too much heat

My rig's tires are approaching replacement time. I like the old school skinny 255/85r16 look but my budget won't allow the Dick Cepek Extreme Country cost. Any 'next best thing' tire recommendations?

The 235/85 can you install on the Oem rims?

my 89 62 needs new tires

all stock. Want to try something other than the BFG

Just installed 255/85r16...

Pizza cutters are great off road. Ran 255s for three sets of tires on my 100. Long contact patch vs short and fat works great on lots of surfaces and allows you to span other's ruts from big fat tires.

Tend to tramline on highway ruts though.

235/85 are for 16 inch rims. If you are truly stock you have 15's not 16's. So to answer your question directly, no you can't. 31X10.50 are prolly a good size for you. Slightly wider than the 235's but similar footprint. Many other tires come in this size if you want something other than BFG. One example:
