I tried the homebrew siping method of a carpet knife. In my opinion it turned out well and the price can't be beat. I recently read the rundown on a siping/grooving tool in 4wd toyota owner and it looked like the bee knee's to me but expensive. So some day maybe I'll own one of those and can groove up the swampers on the other cruiser, should it ever make it back to the road.
So I did these tires yesterday and it was super cold so I only did it for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. My cuts aren't perfectly spaced or completely straight. Oh well. It was damn cold.:meh:
P.s.
It would be really hard to cut your dong off with this method:hillbilly:

C'mon Jake......
you have a BIG ol shop with two wood stoves in it..... whats cold? bring that hunk of hud in the shop and do it.

and you want me to rent shop space????????:flipoff2:

I still think he should have used a ditch witch to sipe.

I did this a couple weeks ago to my 35" grabber MT's. I used a good old olfa knike and a couple blades by the time I was done. Took about 3.5 hours to do all the tires. I did it after our first snowfall. On packed street I could barely move in 2WD and certainly couldn't stop. I was used to my 9.5 wide BFG AT's. They are a stellar winter tire. Once I siped my 12.5 MT's they are awfully close. I payed little attention to spacing and just cut the hell out of the lugs. Each one has at least 3 sipes with some having as many as seven. What a difference. Really noticable on ice and packed snow. @wd is a breeze now. My tires were bought used so I wan't to scared about recking them. If I had a new set I'd do them as well but be more selective and careful.

Listen old man river! I didn't think it was necessary to go over to the shop and start 2 fires and preheat the icebox metal shop to cut on tires for a little over an hour. Also Mr. River, I don't "want" you to rent shop space. I offered to maybe help you out. Maybe I thought I would get points with God for helping out a senior citizen....

.....

As for does it help with traction? Absolutely! I haven't had a chance to really test my siping job. But back when my 55 moved under it's own power I had the 38x15.5's siped at a tire shop for 15 bucks a tire. It was night and day! Before siping the poor piggie would get stuck on flat ground in 6 inches of snow in 2 wheel drive.....very embarassing.
