Hi i have a 94 with 190,000m and im getting a rattle in the very front of the engine or more of a ticking i geuss. A mechanic told me it may be the timing chain. The truck runs great. I plan on adventaly replacing the engine. So my question is if it is the timing chain should i be woried or should i just keep on truckin. Ive read hear that replacing the chain is a ton of work and if im planing on adventaly replacing the engine is it worth it.
Thanks in advace.

Very doubtful it's the timing chain.

The fact that a "mechanic" said it "may" be the chain means nothing.

Keep diagnosing; your engine can go a *lot* longer than 190K.

Its constant in low rpm. It may be doing it in high rpm but i cant hear it.

Wow welcome to my club

My rig as 194 000m on the clock. I live in Québec Canada, took my rig to boston 2 weeks ago and i herd the same thing, rattle at front cover at low rpm ...But on my way back it got worse, cel light whent on. My mechanic whose the specialist in canada for any landcruisers told me my timming chain was loose wich cause a camshasft position cel code.

I am not planing to change the engine because i am satisfied with the oem one so i gave the go ahead to my guy ...Now listen to this to change the timming chain , valve cover needs to be removed then oïl pans because we have 2 ! .

So at the end i decided to have him change all intake gaskets and timming chain wich will be 1500 $ plus taxes

I've read that the timing chains on these motors are pretty stout, and something not to be concerned about. There's a lot of other possibilities though.

Noisy things I've noticed on 1FZ-FE are the injector ticks, idler pulley's (the alternator idler pulley can actually be removed all together without any bad effects, although I'd imagine Toyota engineers put it there for a reason).

I just put some new 10w30 Castrol high mileage syn blend and the motor is much quiter, might be worth a shot if its been a while. Put some good stuff in.

I'd suggest checking what I call the drive pulley. I don't know if it has another name, but it's the pulley that comes out the front of your engine by the crankshaft and it drives all of your belts.

I had a ticking that I couldn't figure out until a few days later when the pulley literally fell off. The :princess: was driving by herself and luckily she pulled over in time to avoid an overheat.

Look to see if the drive pulley wobbles at all and play with the throttle under to hood to see if you can tell where the sound is coming from.
