PO says the timing chain was replaced. I am curious if it would have made sense to replace the HG for this repair? Does the head have to come off to replace the chain? My guess is no. FSM is on it's way. I'm getting paranoid about all of this HG talk!
Thanks.

Nope, the head is about the only thing that does not have to come off to replace the chain

I wonder why the chain was replaced? From what I understand the chain is good until engine rebuild also your 96 should have had the updated chain slipper

Did they replace it as PM? possibly thinking it was like the belts that have a limited lifespan.

Not sure why they replaced it. The PO's kid is who I ended up talking to (bought it from a dealer, got name off old title). He said that they did the timing belt and I told him it doesn't have one. He said it was running funny and they replaced the chain. It looks like they did something up front because the coolant bypass pipe had permtex on it (there should be an O ring, not permatex). Signs show that the timing cover was removed.......no seepage/crud where the head and block meet. I'm thinking of selling the '96 and keeping the '91 (I'll just have to leave 5 min. early wherever I'm going to compensate for the speed difference between the 2).
