I've read all the threads on the subject (Extremely helpful)
I've got the FSM pages.
I 've got all the parts.
And I have the tools.

But I have one nagging question.

To use or not use gasket sealant on the water pump?

The gasket already seems to have some sealant on it.
The FSM does not mention any additional sealant use.
But most threads seem to mention use of additional sealant.

Has anybody done it without the sealant?
How is yours holding up with or without the sealant?
Could the additional sealant actually contaminate the
cooling system?

If I do use sealant, is this the correct one to use?
High temp RTV Silicone Sealant.

I just used the factory OEM Toyota gasket for the water pump: No issues since doing it 26K ago. While you're in there so to speak you might want to either re-brush/re-build/replace your starter. Symptoms seem to start around the 100-120K mark for some 100's.

I opted for no sealant when I replaced mine about a month ago...just the brand new gasket. No problems / leaks. Just make sure you remove all traces of deteriorating black rubber that sticks to the block from the old water pump gasket. There were a few spots I had to work on for quite a while with a razor blade. I finished the cleanup with some carb clearner / degreaser on a rag and wiped down the mating area.

You will need the sealant for the water inlet housing mating area. I used the blue RTV stuff.

Given the distinguished panel of respondents, no sealant it is.
I feel lot better, not using it actually.

Yes, I will use sealant on the inlet housing.

spressomon,
I already got the starter contacts replaced out of necessity. Thanks to you. Your FAQ writeup is what I followed. The pictures really made the difference for me. Oh and btw, again, thanks to you, I got the cv joint finally done. I actually shot videos. I will post them soon, maybe you can have a chuckle or two. Or more.

Thank you guys.
