The clutch slave / fork assy is on the wrong side.

The flywheel housings are symmetrical and the clutch fork and pivot ball can be mounted on one side or the other and function just fine.

Also, you can use the left rear engine mount slave cylinder configuration on the four-speed flywheel housing.

2F will bolt right in

The 2F will bolt right in and should bolt right up to the 3 Speed (not done it personally) without any mods as the blocks are almost identical.

I've bolted 2F manifolds onto an F and believe it works the other way also.

Three speed and four speed bell housings are different.

Three speed transfercases are different (have a lower low-range)

Drive shaft lengths are different w/ a 4 speed.

damn im gone for about 24 hrs and i've got a lot of good feedback! thanks guys!... so after doin a LOT of thread reading with this post and others..... i made my choice........... KEEP IT TOYOTA.... I may be a young guy but im old school @ heart... Its like putting a gibson logo on a fender guitar.. it just doesn't belong! (btw im a fenderguy... not a gibson fan) with that said i've got some comments and questions...

I want something with more power so im leaning more towards finding a 2F rather then rebuilding the F thats in there now.. I checked out SOR and found a serviced 2F motor long block... would that be a good start? i know i'd have to buy the manifolds, carb etc...

the main purpose of the fj would be for pismo beach trips, trips up to my girlfriends family cabin (elev around 7000'), playing around in the river bottom on weekends. Not really worried about beatin guys off the line @ stop lights. It would be fun, but thats what i have a '69 mustang with a 351W for! I want it to be able to get me out of sticky situations but still be able to cruise on the freeway at a go with the flow pace (70-75)... so here are some of the questions i have...

-would i be able to bolt the 2F up to my 3speed trans and transfercase? i just had both rebuilt no more then 5 months ago.. I would eventually like a 4 speed. but would the 3 speed be good for now? Im not running any huge crazy tire size (31x10.5's with stock gearing.. im assuming it's 4.11??)

-what are the advantages of going EFI and using a DUI distributor?

- i like the idea of using an electric fan, would i have to upgrade the alternator or would a stock one be fine? I do plan to install an electric winch. As of right now i upgraded to a cd player and intalled 2 hella 700 series lights. Im still using the stock alternator (assuming its stock, came with the fj when i bought it)

-Would i have to make any modifications in order to drop in a 2F motor? i.e. changing motor mount placement? If so could they be bolted on or would they have to be welded on?

-What would be a good over all set up knowing what the fj's purpose is for? Taking into consideration i'd like to stay away from buying a new transmission for now.. Kind of want to get my money's worth out of the rebuild..

thanks for your help guys! you're teachin this young guy a lot!

Excellent choice, Chris, in keeping it a six...and a 2F is a better engine than a '73 F.
I rebuilt my late F a couple times before I went to the 2F. You can put a 2F in your rig with no welding required.
You manifolds should bolt onto a 2F with perhaps just a little grinding for the larger manifold studs. So you can keep your carb, linkage and aircleaner all stock. The front motor mounts are slightly different on the 2F,(bigger bolts) but should bolt to your frame just fine. You can put your stock fan on the 2F waterpump and keep your shroud stock as well. You can use your stock distributer to get it running and decide on other options later. Or put a big head Toy side cover on the engine while it's out and use the bighead Toy dizzy. You have lots of options there.
Sure, you could buy a longblock from SOR, but they are sorta high-priced and shipping could be an issue. You could perhaps find a good used block here on Mud. Maybe get a 4 speed with it.

Provided you use ‘step-down’ studs, or modify the manifolds to fit the larger fasteners (12mm vs. 10mm).

The power of the Dark Side!

(Actually, an F or 2F would have done just fine here too. I wasn't going very fast. it just looks it.)

It's much easier to get working right and especially to pass emissions, plus no more worn out Aisan carbs to deal with. No one makes them new any more. Plus more power, better fuel economy, "turn the key and go"... I don't have mine done yet but will soon. Everything I hear about this conversion is great. The DUI dizzy means no points, nothing to set other than basic timing, more spark, etc.

Motor mounts are the same in the frame. However the engine mounts (the actual hunks of metal that go between the engine and frame) are different. I think one of them can be used from the F to the 2F but you need to get one more to match. Again, if you had that junker 2F... :D Check the diagrams on the SOR website.

Hmmm dang. Should have thought of that. Oh well it works on the other side too, just had to source a hose.

Agreed.

slinger, I have 2F block and head just sitting at a shop in Tempe AZ. Spend a nice weekend driving out here (it's about a 7 hour drive each way) and I'll give you the stuff I have left over. I have a block, head, probably a side cover, bunch of other stuff. You'd need to get the block and head redone but it's FREE!

The pics of the parts are HERE
