I'm told swapping in a tilt steering column is plug and play. But the tilt column I have from an 86 has one connector that my 88 non tilt has. It has two yellow wires. Can anyone tell me what they are for?

I have a FSM that's only wiring (nothing else) for 86 trucks and 4Runners, I have looked all through it but maybe I missed something. Any chance that the 86 had cruise control or it was a turbo?

It was just a 22RE and no cruise control. But it was a California emissions truck if that matters. Thanks for looking. I have an 88 manual in my garage somewhere that I need to take a look at.

I guess I'll be able to see where it goes once I tear into it.

pretty sure that's cruise and the courtesy light
or delay wipers

I installed a tilt column in my DLX a couple decades ago. As I recall, not all the connectors were used. There was one or two that matched up to what I had, and the others dangled. There are lots of connectors on our trucks that are not used. Don't over analyze this.

I agree with Pappy, it's just a mystery at this point. Having said that, are there any trace colors on those wires? It unusual fir Toyota to use solid color insulation (but not unheard of). Closest I could find was the Cruise Control stop switch which has Yellow-Red and Yellow-Green wires.

Thanks for the help on this you guys. This is the column that I took out of the 86 that I'm building. I didn't remove any type of cruise control unit under the hood that I remember. I thought it just had the throttle cable but it has been 3 years. Yikes

I think It does have wiper delay which I'd like to be able to use if possible. My 88 does not have it. I'm using my 88 harness. The 86 is toasted and chewed up by rodents. I assumed the delay was built into the column since I have heard from many Toyota people that it should just plug in and work.

I was going to check part numbers of the wiper motors to see if there is a difference. My 88 motor is in great shape. The 86 is pretty crusty.

I'll look at the yellow wires again to see if there are any other color stripes. I might have the 86 harness out there too. I gotta do some digging and take a closer look at the column.

the colors on the switch side don't always match the harness.
these are for adjustable delay.

in the passenger kick

This. The relay is the green box behind the ECU. Make sure you get the pigtail for it. The connector will be on the harness, tucked up tight. It might even be taped up. It can be hard to find, but it will be there.

I had a lot going on today and just got home so I grabbed the 86 cab harness and plugged it in to the column. The two yellow wires are just solid yellow down into the column. They plug into a green and green/black wire. I have the 86 wiper control but nowhere to plug it into my 88 harness. This truck did not have cruise. Just the tilt column and the wipers with wiper delay.

I never "wanted" for a tilt column but maybe I don't know what I was missing. I DID wish I had the wiper delay back when I daily drove my truck but it's more off road only now so I'm going to put the column change on hold. If I didn't already put all the HVAC stuff in, maybe.......I'd work on modifying the harness.

Just prior to this build I had freshened up my 88 column. New bearing, cleaned up all the switches, horn contact plate etc. so I'm sticking it back in. I'd like to get this truck at least started. I have shoulder replacement coming up in August and that will put me down for a while.

@pappy, thanks for posting that. I couldn't find a pigtail to plug into on my 88 harness but I'll look again. If it's there, I'll rethink the column swap. I had a good running 3.4 swap so maybe I should get it running first. I really do appreciate you guys taking the time to post pics and info. This is an awesome forum.

do you have a part number for the column bearing. i noticed mine is shyt

@gnob, sorry, I did the column right after my Sand, Hollow, Moab and Colorado trip back in 2019 so I don't have it. I probably looked it up online and searched for the part number. The same time I found out the dang PIN that wears out and keeps the horn from working is called a "PLATE"🙄

@gnob, I just took a quick look at Toyota Parts Deal for my 88 and it shows upper and lower bearings listed for tilt and non tilt columns. I really don't remember where I got mine. I only changed one of them.

@pappy, I just took a few more looks at my harness where it comes through the firewall and fender both. I was hoping to find two unused connectors for the wiper delay and no luck. I found my factory 88 truck and 4Runner manual. I'll take at look at how the 88 harness might connect.

The harness for the relay will be above the ECU. It's there, taped up. I remember it was a challenge to find when I did my install.
