I assume everyone knows the rear door (stock arm) has a lock out. I see the conversion to a ram and I never understood why. On a hill, offroad the ram can get overweight and come back at you. I just open, push the cam lock, and it stays put no matter what.

I'm of the same mindset- why fix it if it's not broken? Although, there are still times that I forgot I locked it and try to close the hatch which can't be good for the hinges.

Not sure if it was here or GXOR but I have read of only one case where the lockout mechanism actually broke.
 
I think it depends on your use and needs - my wife drives ours and hated the stock lock as it took a bit of gusto to get it to lock and then release. Plus if you aren't in the habit or don't think of it, the door closes on you and/or the wind blows it. She loves the gas strut I put on. But I would like to figure out a way to lock it as well...
 
My dad's '07 FJ came with the gas strut, so it was a no-brainer to do the mod on my GX. I'd prefer the door open up like a 4R, but we can't have everything...can we...?
 
Will the gas strut stop where you want it to? I’m usually towing a trailer and worry that the strut would just force the door into the trailer/hitch
 
I am still waiting for you guys to realize the FJ strut with cam lock will fit on a GX :p
 
Haha, yeah??? You're supposed to SHARE your discoveries, not sit back and laugh at your screen while we cobble and experiment!!!

I asked this question awhile ago when @lgrt posted the strut mod. He thought that the FJC rear strut and lock was not compatible?
 
I didn't realize that the remote lock "Beep" doesn't sound when one of the doors does not lock for some reason. The other doors lock but if one doesn't, no sound.

Found this out today as it appears the driver's side second door lock is having a issue. I suspect it is dirty contacts on in the actuator motor that I have seen some complaints about.

Got a part# on that? Excellent thinking, never paid attention to that when looking at GXs, picking mine up tomorrow.
 
I tried the FJ rear door strut.

Bought a new OEM part and monkey'd around with it for a bit. I fabricated some new brackets and found that it will work, but will only open the door about 70%. Or it can be mounted to allow the door to open all the way, but will only close 70%.

Beyond that, the strut body is too wide to smoothly operate. If you mount it in its correct orientation, the door pops the strut body off the mounting ball.

I did post this in the strut mod thread back when I first tried it.

Cool concept and maybe someone smarter than me can figure it out but for my time and money it was too much work to get it working as designed.
 
After spending 1 night in the tent with wind gusts up to 40mph. We moved all the stuff into the tent, the 120 with the 2nd row seats removed comfortably sleeps 2 up to 6' tall and fits two Nemo Astro air pads perfectly

Gotta remove those seats, or it's only enough sleeping room for small people lol. Learned that the hard way... 😂
