The roof is Line-X'd !!

I think it serves its purpose and looks alright too.
At least it would prevent some scratching in a roll over too :grinpimp:

On a serious note though, how thick is the LineX ? I ask because I was wondering if a magnetic mount of a CB antenna would still stick to the roof through this? That would prevent any scratches from the magnetic mount while also serving your purpose of removing the rack.

Thickness is up to you....just spray on as many passes as you wish. If you go to a shop, ask for a sample to place on your roof to try out in the parking lot. These samples will give you an idea of how your magnet works thru various thickness.

Ary,

The '97 factory rack has 4 ribs directly on the roof. It then has the outer lifted ribs. These are the ones that come down into the 4 feet that attach to the roof with screws. These feet are what grind into the paint over time.

What you see in the pics are all 4 ribs Line-X'd, BUT I masked off the outer feet into the outer 2 ribs. This is why the outer Line-X'd ribs bulge out at the ends...they are simply encompassing the areas that the feet were mounted.

Here you go...

Here are a few similar pics that show what the profile is like from the side. You actually have to be standing back a bit from the cruiser to see this normally.

Shoot, good question! I never actually measured. To be honest, once they closed the area off to start spraying I just walked away till it was done. I never even thought to consider that I should query normal thicknesses. It came out thicker than I had imagined it might, but it grew on me very quickly there after.

It's probably at 1/16", but I will try and remember to measure it for you today and post back. At it's current thickness it serves the idea of a 'roof pad' quite well. Anything thinner and I'd feel apprehensive taking anything up there for long drives.

There is a small chance that I might just take a utility knife to the leading edges to angle the transition somewhat. Should give me back what? 7-8 MPG?? :D

Yeah that should get you back up the the normal 20-30 mpg.

I think smoothing might be good, as long as there is nothing integral to the surface as it is, like a UV coating or something. I'm just thinking about simple stuff like washing the roof - a rag might catch the edge and start peeling it back, little by little.

T Y, you almost had me confused with those parking lot pics without all the snow. First time i've seen that.

I plan on putting a coat on mine as well...much thinner...all over.

I have never given up the dream, even when I have lacked the budget for over a year :)

Dan, do you realize there will be a big solar gain? Shiny waxed paint reflects a lot more heat than rough polyurethane.

Tyler,

You mentioned that future roof tie down requirements would mean rope through the windows. Did you know they make these nifty little hook jobs that will allow you to securely hook a strap to your rain gutters? I've used them on my 80 years ago and they're rattling around in the garage somewhere. They're squared off thick sheetmetal hooks, basically. Something to toss in your jack compartment so you can spontaneously tie something off.

I had no idea Doug. Are you confident that they'll secure a load? I''d like to see a link if you have one. Like you said they'd be really good to carry just in case the need arose.

Tyler,

For a roof rack why not get a gutter mounted one or even the more simple type that tradesmen use for mounting ladders these bolt on to the gutter as well and are very cheep.

I really don't anticipate using the roof pads. Once in a rare occassion perhaps. I've never even used the stock roof rack. This is why the idea of the hooks that Doug mentioned seems ideal. I can stow them and forget about them until a rainy day. In the meantime the roof remains clean...

Ty,

Busy day today with church and my bro-in-law and family moving to town, but I'll try to remember to find them. I believe they're made by a well known brand and I think I may even have the box. PM me if I forget. I was impressed at how well they held on a 1400 mile trip and I think I bought two different shapes to see which was best. This was 13 years ago...

I was just at Sears, and saw these hooks Doug was talking about in the automotive section by the hardware to secure those rooftop carriers. There were several different sized gutter hooks too. A package of 6 was around $8.
Similar to this here: http://www.strapworks.com/gutterhookstraps.html

Wonder if Doug will use both 80's to help move......going to be difficult keeping an eye out for both at the same time.

"Hey, watch that door!"
"Lift that please! Don't slide it along the carpet"

Doug - This 80 is handling the heavy load pretty well eh?
B.I.L. - Ahhh, yeah sure ...
Doug - Trannys smooth as silk
B.I.L. - Ahhh, yeah sure
Doug - Bought this new, ya know
B.I.L - Ahhh..............great
Doug - Did I mention I brought the babies home in this Land Cruiser?
B.I.L - Ahhh, yeah. I remember you mentioned it at our wedding dinner; twice.
Doug - Oh yeah :D . Hey gimme a few minutes when we get to your new place. I want to update my log.
B.I.L. - Cool...I have a magic marker if you need something to write with.
Doug - Ahhh, no. That will be fine thanks............

Sorry .. couldn't resist an attempt at humour. ;)

No rush on the hooks Doug. Whenever you have time is fine.

I'm trying to think how they attach...don't our gutters open upwards? Hmmm?
