Just starting my PDI intercooler install today. I've already run into a little snag.

I have a 1HDFT and the glow screen relay assembly is mounted right where the intercooler piping needs to go on the driver's side (RHS)

So I have a few questions:
1. Has anyone relocated this relay?
2. Or should I just delete the glow screen heater? I'm in Utah and most winters are 10-30° F. The cruiser lives in a garage that stays in the 40s most of the winter.
I have a 1HD-FT in my ‘91 HDJ80 and when I added a Safari front-mount intercooler in 2008 I needed to lose the glowscreen. Never been an issue. Also never much below freezing where I live but direct-injection diesels will usually start just fine to well below freezing. You could add a Webssto or Espar coolant heater if it does drop way below freezing where you live or want to driveFirst off, Ikarus - thank you for documenting everything you do and bringing so much to this board. I'm essentially following in your footsteps right now. I'm in the middle of deleting the EGR, cleaning up the mess it created, installing the PDI intercooler, 3" exhaust, and general refresh.
I ran into the same obstacle today with the intake heater relay and I'm interested in keeping it. Upon further research, the intake heater is supposed to help prevent bore wetting and oil dilution due to incomplete combustion in super cold conditions. How much this is a factor, I don't know. I suppose I could change the oil a little more often in such conditions if I were to delete it.
So my questions are:
1. Has anyone else with a front mount intercooler kept their intake heater?
2. Where did you relocated the relay?
For clarity, the intake screen heater is used for cold starting only, if you live somewhere that doesn't get "winter condition", then you're good. If you do see some cold, a coolant heater is recommended, an Espar or Webasto allows you to eliminate cold starting where ever you are, even when you don't have a plug in available.First off, Ikarus - thank you for documenting everything you do and bringing so much to this board. I fitted the quikaz fan kit that replaces the existing fan and fan hub, now no issuesI’m about to start a diesel swap on my 80. Got a question for the FMIC brain-trust here.
For those of you with PDI intercoolers (or equivalent), did you notice a decrease in A/C efficiency or an increase in water temps?
Are you running a mechanical fan? Or electric?
Any room behind the intercooler and in front of condenser for A/C pusher fan?
The reason I ask is that the high today in Central Texas 103°. And Austin has tons of traffic.

In my opinion, as long as your cooling system is "healthy" the effects of adding the intercooler should be insignificant. Just like anything, if it is marginal, even the slightest change will cause an upset. Take modern cars for instance, their systems are such that it doesn't matter if you are on the sun or towing a house the temps stay stable. Granted our cruisers have 20-30 year old tech so we do have to consider changes in external forces. For what its worth, when I added a PDI to my 70 series, the cooling did not get noticeably worse than pre-intercooler.

i'm in South Florida and my AC has no issue at all with the intercooler. have been stuck in traffic mid summer idling with no airflow, no issues.I’m about to start a diesel swap on my 80. Got a question for the FMIC brain-trust here.

I have one on order for 1hd-t should be here in 2 weeks. just the intercooler not the kit, I'm going to run a universal heat exchanger and a Mercedes/Bosch water pump. I bought a front mount and then changed my mind...Anyone have experience with the Plazmaman W2A kit on an 1hd-ft? Information on them seem limited; or I'm not looking in the right places...

Didn't want to add a bunch of big pipes running all over the place and adding a bunch of volume between the turbo and intake (i know the lag is minimal). Where the turbo is on the 1hdt in a landcruiser you cant clock the turbo downward because the motor mount is right in the way. You have to run a big u-turn and go back down.... 3/4" rubber hoses are alot easier to run then big 2.5 or 3" pipes. Also I'm guessing if your at the bottom of big hill at a standstill intake temps might be a little lower with the air to water system if the water temp can stay low. can't be sure about that though, Are there downsides? yes more complicated, more things that can leak, more fluids, more wiring.What made you change your mind?
its well worth it especially if you live in an area with a lot of hills and mountain passes. haven't had any instances where it got in the way of any kind of regular maintenance.Does anyone have any EGT data on the water to air intercooler vs PDI? Had a tough time keeping EGTs down with non-intercooled stock 1hdft during a trip to Colorado. Very close to pulling trigger on PDI but hesitant due to lack of simplicity in install and taking up a lot of space making in complicated to service.
