Pre vs Post Turbo EGT's

I agree that its about 300F Different. My post-turbo alrm is set st 900F. I rarely hit that.

Don't really agree on the response man. No need to be cynical. The guy had wrong information and that's it. :)

As far the testing process it's important to have an accurate test setup.
Meaning, environment, same test equipment, etc.

Your test had 2 different gauges, driving in the winter time, etc.

Next step would be do it on a Dyno, same brand of gauges, preferably calibrated by a lab, new probes at same ends etc. Multiple data points.

I for one don't have the time to do it. So kudos for getting us going in the right direction.

It's better than no-testing for sure.

Thanks for doing it for the diesel 80 community.

I guess I'm just curious if under normal driving conditions you need to watch egt's like a

No, you shouldn't have to watch it like a hawk IF it has been tuned to a safe limit when it's under high load.
if you're chasing more performance, and are closer to the safe limit, it pays to keep an eye on EGT.
even then, understanding the conditions that will push the EGT up means you can just keep an eye on it when pushing is limits, and, or learn to adjust your driving habits to keep it safe.

the problem with a 'new to you' vehicle is there's no way to know if the tune is safe without putting it on a dyno with someone who knows what they are doing with these vehicles, or put in an EGT gauge.

I think it is about 100 degrees different from placing it in the manifold.

Take your money to the casino then, go to the roulette wheel, and put $10k on red.

With the EGT probe after the turbo, you don't know if your looking at Red, or Black. There's no rule of thumb here that's reliable

Get it wrong and a rebuild will burn up to $10k

I didn't read any cynicalism in his response at all! He was just being helpful and also went out of his way to link another thread with further information.

Jeez tough crowd (or should I say "sensitive")

I thought I had pics of my top mount IC but couldn't find them in this thread, so I'm either posting some, or posting some again?!.

So, had a professional welder TIG the pieces together I just fit them, managed to get it centered roughly with that funny piece that wraps under and overall the plenum is really short. Also had him burn on a cap for oil fill on the front valve cover, and did the block off plate on the timing cover for more space.

6BT out of a 91 dodge, ebay internoodler, WRX STI hood scoop. It knocks the temps down enough, have another turbo to put on, rebuilt it but it had some issues so I swapped the old back in, but the intercooler was built to fit either.

I know that a front mount would push more air, but with this power train I'm really only needing it pulling hills on the highway, as for the trail the donk doesn't really need it, and wont get mud in there like if it was front mounted. I have a couple fans to fit on the IC and temp switch etc, but I never installed them and don't think I will, it shouldn't really need it sitting and idling. Also all the exhaust manifold and first few feet of exhaust pipe are insulated so heat soak isnt much of a factor at idle.

I ordered my intercooler today and it should arrive next week sometime so at least I can get started with the install in the next few weeks.. I went for a slightly thinner one 550x230x65mm as I'm installing into a 60 and there isn't as much room behind the front grill as an 80.. particularly with the A/C condenser in there too..

I had a tough time trying to decide between a front and top mounted unit, the top would have been a way easier install and I think it would have worked ok but I'm hoping the extra PITA to shoehorn the front mounted one pays off..

Here's a pic with my front grill off I'm going to have to get that A/C pipe on the right re-routed to make space for the IC..

My greatest worry is that the IC will affect my radiator and A/C condenser cooling negatively.. I suppose that's where the top mounted one would score..:meh:

How did that setup go mate? Any negative effects with radiator temp? Cheers

My version of intercooler install. Decided to run the pipes as shown, there is really no room on left side to get the pipe through all the items that are on way.
Factory trans oil cooler had to go, way too thick.
IC core could have been 5cm taller, but this will do for now.

Hi,

A couple of day ago I've installed my new setup, and found that I could not fit the lower support/reinforcement, as per attached image... It just misses it!

IMG_20200520_102630_171.jpg

Is it a miss built support? Is it usually a thing in this type of ICs? Am I missing something?

I just purchased this w2a kit from eBay - came from China and was on my doorstep within a week. Quality of the intercooler and heat exchanger look great. The water pump and wiring kit look cheap and may need upgrading in the future. The holes for the intercooler bracket look to be in the wrong location so that will need modification. The intercooler has HPD punched on the tanks. I have to finish installing my turbo and intake before installing this kit. I will post up some photos when installed.

@toyotology , was your installation smooth or did you run into some issue like me?

Cheers

I installed some spacers - about 15mm worth and used longer bolts. It would be best to re-work the bracket or make new but I haven’t had any problems using the spacers. I thought I had a photo but apparently didn't take one.

I also had to the cut the intake pipe down between the turbo and intercooler. That was the only other issue I had with the kit.

Thanks for your replies, I'll try some spacers on the bracket.
For my installation, all the rest was OK. But I haven't installed the heat exchanger, yet, I'm still using my old one, a bit smaller maybe the neatly the size of yours.

Cheers

Hi legends,

Im thinking about getting a front mount A2A Intercooler. Not sure which one is the best on the market at the moment ? Im thinking between PDI or HPD. Any suggestion ?

Location in Australia

cheers

PDI any day of the week.

Thanks champs,

i will definitely look into PDI.
Another question, will the intercooler cause any problems for radiator cooling since it will blocked some of the air flow to the radiator?

I've never had problems provided the cooling system is in good shape.

Not that I have noticed. Radiator needs to be free of dirt and debris for starters and the coolant being in good condition are bigger factors That might affect cooling capacity than adding the FMIC.

And the fan clutch being decent

Not even in 46 DegC temps slogging in thick sand in Botswana while heavily loaded for a 2week kalahari trip did I ever have a problem. My EGTs dropped by 100 to 150 DegC across the range after fitting the XL PDI.
