Used black HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene) plastic.
You use the same tools as you would on wood.

My tailgate gets some beating on/off loading equipment daily, it also has to serve as "kitchen" on longer trips.
The HDPE plate will scratch easily, but its viritually indestructible and easy peasy to keep clean. - Opposite to the oem carpet.
