The Million Mile Engine... possible?

With my 150-250 miles per month average I'll never get to 1 million miles before I die. Hell at that rate my Bar's HG leak fix will also last forever, there goes my engine swap pipe dream hahaha!

Same here =)

Guy in my office just passed 860k with his '96. He maintains all that he has replaced for major components are the cats - he's on his 3rd set. Not 100% sure I buy it, but I did verify his odometer at least. Not the prettiest 80 on the road, but still running. Ish.

Edit: he's also the original owner. When he gets closer to 1M I might have to see if TLCA wants to do an article or anything.

That's 45k/year! Pics or it didn't happen!

Or $130k in gas! Holy crap!

I'll snag a shot of the odometer sometime soon, along with an exterior one as well.

He lives way outside of town and works in sales, so he's always driving. The cost in gas is staggering. I have a different car to make calls for this exact reason.

Sry for the late reply. Let me clarify, i meant 1 million miles one a single high quality rebuild. I know some inline 6 semi engines are advertised as million mile engines.

Cummins engine company was a client of mine when I was a roof consultant. I got to go to their research and development facility in Columbus, IN. They had engines running on simulated day-to-day dyno programs that had over 6 million miles on them. Never rebuilt. Just oil changes. Crazy.

Not an 80, but noteworthy none the less. Original engine. Cylinder head has never been off.

(This is not my rig)

I remember reading the media release from Toyota, just prior to the 1FZ-FE being released into production here in AU It showed the major maintenance schedule for the engine and...I'm going from memory here...it was something like:
Top end rebuild 250,000 kms
Total engine rebuild 500,000kms
Top end rebuild 750,000
Discard 1,000,000

I was quite taken by this and went out and bought one.

Does he still have his rig and if so, how many miles now?

I actually don’t care because I won’t own mine long enough, but I’d be more impressed with 1M miles over a longer period of time than that one Tundra with the 4.7L V8 2UZ-FE that hit 1M in ~8 years.

It’ll take me 72 years to hit 1M at 10k miles of LA driving with your multiple start/stops which will inevitably do work on that head gasket and cyl 6 egr. By the time the next rebuild comes around there will be no parts because Toyota is in the biz of building smart cities in the middle of the ocean, I will be chillin’ on the sofa sleeping most of the day somewhere in the Pacific live my best meta life… and most likely human driven gas engine cars will be outlawed which would be the least of my concerns.

Hug your 80 today. Longevity is overrated.

The issue is where and when you do your 1 million miles. I think it is highly feasible if you got on the motorway and drove 'X' amount of miles an engine would easily do it, but if you live in the city, then the vehicle may have covered 10 miles, but the engine may have run for an hour?

Regards

Dave

Just about any engine could last a million miles if consistently kept in its operating temperature with minimal cold starts and following the maintenance schedule i.e. semi trucks, hotshot drivers, taxi cabs etc.

I’m at 506k on the original unopened engine, and she is tired. It still passes CO emissions and still gets driven up and over the rockies about once per month, but it’s burning about a qt over 800-1k miles. It’s pretty down on power compared to the 203k my other 80 has.

Currently at 431,xxx on the OD, but realistically she's well over half a million (been running 35's forever)
Still runs like brand new
Doesn't burn a drop of oil and I trust her to go anywhere
No doubt in my mind she'll eventually hit a million and then some, but it probably wont be in my lifetime (not with today's gas prices)
I just can't afford to drive her as often as I used to
