It all started with a 6 mos search for the right HeeP, with a short side trip gawking at a few Sami's.
Then this Cool looking pile appeared on Craigslist.
It had sat for 3 years the PO didnt even bother to get it running b4 selling.
I being the trusting soul that I am took him at his word. And bent over paying the price he was asking. (not that I didnt try to talk him down). He wouldnt budge.
So here I am with new a hobby.
My intentions to make a capable wheeler that is able to be a DD
No intentiuons of actually usuing it as such but would nice to have a 2nd car capable of DD.
Mods I expect to perform over the next couple of years.
4" SUA
35 x 9 or 10.5 tires
4.3 or 5.3 chevy power plant
sm 420
Toybox
Jackson Cage
Fix all the non working neglected stuff on this unit.
Broken steering wheel
no working factory guages
winch cable rusted into an unusable condition
leaky wheel cylinders
door window crank non functional
clutch non working
I digress.. the list could go on for pages
On with the pics.

Except for the fact your bezel is up-side down(YEAH, MY FIRST!!!) it looks like a good score. Of course, that depends on what you paid for it, but that is a personal thing, it's your baby. Let us know how it turns out, and welcome to the group.(sick as we are!):cheers::beer:

You got the star, post em up!

Nice start. Looks pretty complete, which is a good start. You might want to add rust repair to your list as well. That rear seal, and I am sure something is lurking under that diamond plate.;)

And you heard at least one of these during the deal, right?
"All it needs is a battery. Should fire right up."
"Drove fine when I parked it."
"Runs good. Just haven't had time to use it."

Like selling a blind horse to a dude - "He's not a real looker, but he rides good."

Buddy, I know how you feel. But that's nice raw material you're working with now ! :D

Yep, the story that I got is "All you need to do is put the transmission back in it and you'll be good to go."

6 months and almost $2000 later, its almost drivable

But at least you didn't end up with a Heep

More

Rear seal done. Man that thing takes alot of gear lube.
(replaced all of it, TC, Tran,Fdiff, Rear diff.)
found out I need a seal behind the E brake while I was under there.
Ordered new shoes and Hardware kit for the E. Brake.
These pics have been posted in another thread
"On with the consolidation".
Steering wheel had One broken spoke so I replaced it.
The new padded wheel is awesome "Feels so nice" When it gets
Shabby It is only 37.00 to replace :)
I cut off the outer circle and the spokes of the original wheel.
Put on a lathe and turned the hub round.
Bolted a piece of aluminum to the hub on the back side and turned it with a taper to match the Column.
A little ace Satin finish black in a rattle can.

all you need is an orng stripe on the side and you could call it the ninja turtle! Have funwith it and good luck.

The stalk is the PO's handy work

I will get around to doing something about that sooner or later.
Getting back on track. I am building a new bumper, my fairlead
is a wrap around type that is over 30yrs old. Its mounting holes
are not center'd .
Long story short it needs to modified to use modern mounting.
For the day when i Feel I am rich enough to afford synthetic rope and need to buy a new fairlead.

Ha ha!

Trollhole. Nice cowinkidink the inspiration came from a song. A flash back to my youth.
There are alot of parallels in the song to my FJ40 experience.
I currently am at the part where She dumps him at the Show
I see that the 40 dream I envisioned is just that a dream.
Its time to get up look in the mirror and vow to get me a guitar
(set of tools and a welder) practice till I get it right.
Anyway enough of my ramblings. Draw your own parallels from the song. Just say MEH (shruggs shoulders)
Here is a youtube video of the SongYouTube - The Marshall Plan music video - Blue Öyster Cult

now for a little bumper to go with that fair lead

This has been one long running project.. this bumper that is.
Here is the beginnings
pic 1 shows the first method of putting on the end cap.
Didint look to well so I cut it off and went with plan B
pic 2 Shows what it looked like.. really wasnt that bad primer and paint It woulda looked good.. but I strive for perfection. Rarely attaining but ending up with an acceptable outcome.
pic 3 Shows the holes cut for the FairLead and the shackle mount
I have a bellvue winch and have to make a new mounting plate and put a couple of new holes in the bumper for the lower mount of the winch.
More to come.
