It seems some of the Clemson players read Richard's recent diatribe on Mud.
CLEMSON - The frustration of losing boiled over inside Clemson's locker room after last week's 13-12 loss to Maryland.
Junior linebacker Nick Watkins said an argument between reserve linebacker Cortney Vincent and defensive coordinator Vic Koenning escalated into a larger spat between players and coaches after the Tigers lost on a field goal as time expired.
"The defense got mad, and then everybody got mad," Watkins said. "One coach said something, then another coach said something. Players and coaches were going back and forth."
Watkins said the flare-up was probably the result of a team watching its hopes and dreams slipping away. Clemson was 7-1 and ranked No. 10 after an Oct. 21 win over Georgia Tech, but back-to-back losses to Virginia Tech and Maryland have all but eliminated the Tigers from challenging for their first Atlantic Coast Conference title in 15 years.
Watkins said the argument was resolved before head coach Tommy Bowden reached the locker room.
"As much talent as we have on this team and as much expectations as we have, it was only a matter of time before something like that happened," Watkins said. "The players are playing our best, so we feel it the most. I feel like losing hurts me more than the coaches, because I'm playing. But the coaches do put a lot of time in it, too."
Koenning said one of his players "wasn't handling himself properly," and he called him out for it.
"Everybody's (ticked) off and frustrated," Koenning said. "It isn't fun. We don't like losing."
Another insider who witnessed the melee went on to write:
Following the pillow fight they kissed and made up . Jad Dean lead them
in a group rock rubbing and they all felt better.
One was quoted as saying " Heck, we all love Boise this time of year!"
"I'm predicting a blowout in the Textile bowl followed by a similar
awesome offensive display against those hated Shamecocks!"
