I would be shocked to see Hyundai build an SUV with a solid rear axle.....

They said the same thing about Lexus when the LS entered the field.

They said the Koreans couldn't produce a car to compete with the German sports sedans, now we have the Stinger GT.

Those Koreans build some good stuff and their products are only improving all while the big manufacturers are rather stagnant. Kia/Hyundai have come far from the monumental s***box that was the 90s area Accent.

I agree that a Hyundai might be the most improved brand ever. Quality is now first rate for their segments.

Not sure I understand the Lexus comparison though... Lexus has had killer ratings since its very first 400, and it came directly out of Totota and it’s entire history behind it.

Perhaps you meant another company?

I edited it, but I was referring to the LS trying to compete with flagship German luxury cars. The LS wasn't great from the beginning, it had a massive recall. Now they're contenders.

Point being, at least Kia/Hyundai are taking chances and improving their brand. I wouldn't count them out in any aspect.

Ah.

Ya, Lexus never went through a crap quality phase. Hyundai was some seriously crappy poo in the late 80’s. Pretty amazing progress.

Frankly, I believe if they truly wanted to, they are capable of a competitor. I’d be amazed if they commit at that level.

On the other hand...their latest funky sports sedan is actually pretty beast! I’d love to drive one...

Edit:
Heh... Just saw your edit and mention of the Stinger. Honestly I think that is one sweet sedan. They are showing some serious balls... Besides it’s legit performance...I love it’s amazing user customizations to so many aspects of the electronics.

Yeah the Stinger GT has some presence, it's a pretty cool ride that'll catch your eye on the road. Plus that slate color is unique.

Which is why I believe if the Koreans are willing to focus on building a proper off-roader/tourer, it could be pretty damn good... after a few generations of course. The off-road market isn't booming but neither is the sport sedan market and they took a stab at it. So who knows?

More news, confirmation of earlier predictions...

Next Toyota Land Cruiser losing V8?

I still feel like this is all hype and there has only been 1 thing to make me think toyota will do a turbo V6 in the LC and thats bc like many others had said, it is in the LS. I get so sick of articles that seem like click bait.....

Hyundai/Kia are no joke. They hired a bunch of engineers and designers from Audi and BMW. They are investing billions.

Anyone considering a Range Rover sport to get them by until the next Land cruiser?

I “consider” the sport every time I see one heading to the shop on a flatbed... :) ...which happens with disturbingly high frequency.

Don’t do it.

Absolutely NOT. They are sexy looking, definitely nicer interiors (2018 LX withstanding) but the cost of repair and maintenance is staggering outside of warranty. The things that will go wrong are just stupid and expensive.

This. The natural environment for a Range Rover is on the back of a flatbed. I take my SUV off-road. During this last LCDC, we drove up an off-road track for a couple hours up to the top of Imogene Pass at 13,000’ elevation. I trust that my Land Cruiser will get me back down that mountain. I don’t trust that a Range Rover would do the same.

If all someone does is drive around town and turns over their Range Rover lease every couple years, then maybe that would be OK. But my bet is that you will still end spending a fair bit of time at the dealer for repairs and that just sucks. Life is too short to spend it in dealer waiting rooms.

I have seriously considered it. I rented a 2018 Range Rover Sport base model for a couple days and liked it, and the best part about it was that because it was light on options (and no doubt had a fleet discount) the MSRP was only $64k. It still had the Meridian sound, adaptive suspension, pano roof, and some other good stuff. The reliability has gone way up since Tata took over, and the RRS (especially the base) has at least as high if not higher residual than the Land Cruiser. Generally speaking, the RRS feels at least 5 years newer than a new LC from a tech and design standpoint, and it has presence on the road that few other cars can match at any price point. I would of course be one of the few who would wheel it which concerned me about durability in those scenarios, and after I weighed all the pros and cons it made more sense for me to stick with the LC. I would like to mention one of the biggest cons was that my wife hates the image the RRS conveys, and after having some high end German cars I can confirm people have some serious aggression to conspicuously nice cars. Also, I wouldn't own a RRS out of warranty, ever, under any circumstance, but they are not the same company they used to be. It's a seriously good SUV, and if you can find a lower spec'd one in the low to mid $60k range, it's not a bad way to go IMO.

I appreciate the feedback. There is a lot of truth to what you guys are seeing but what I see as maybe one of the biggest detractors is the image of the Range Rover as opposed to that of the land cruiser. With a land cruiser I get the sense I’m paying for engineering, reliability and durability. With the Range Rover I get the feeling I would be paying for perception. In the dc Area the Land Rover dealers won’t even budge off the price which seems to be because there enough people just willing to throw money at a status vehicle. Not much worse than a pretentious car dealer.

My guess is that most Range Rovers are leased, not purchased.
