Under the moonlight, the serious moonlight.
I hate carbs, they confuse the hell out of me. And when you consider my mechanical ineptitude as a whole, I really hate emissions.

Anyway, to the issue. The 60 just missed passing emissions. It failed the carbon monoxide in grams/mile test. The applicable standard is 40.00 while it ran a 40.49. My question is would turning the idle down help with CO? Any other tried and true easy fixes?

She's running good and she cleans up pretty well. Having her legal would just be awesome. Thanks for the help.

Alcohol? Can't remember if thats for CO or NOX but I always dropped a quart in the tank before filling up for the emissions test.

Heck, a retest at a cooler or warmer time of the day might do it. I've used alcohol as well, I believe it was fuel de-icer or ispropanol, but don't take my word for it, and I don't remember what symptom it was supposed to fix either, but I think it was CO. You should be able to find some recommendations for fuel/alcohol ratios somewhere online. I remember adding some to an almost-empty tank. Did it fail at idle, under load, or both? If at idle, turning down the idle fuel mixture screw might do the trick.

bring it Randy's - be done with it

worked for me :grinpimp:

Dammit! I forgot I was gonna get you a price on the FSMs. I have the 2F engine and emissions manuals. How's $30 for both? I'll even throw in the Chilton's for nothing (about what it's worth) if you wanna come get them.

Have you adjusted the timing yet? I'd go there first. Like I said, I set it to factory, which is for the gas they sold in '83. Gas flows, atomizes and burns differently nowadays, and timing needs to be adjusted accordingly.
On the main Mud page, under Tech Links, there's a link to how to set timing with a vacuum gauge.

Looked but can't find it:confused: Can you link it por favor. I'm interested in this method.

III - I feel your pain. I tested no less than 6 times, and eventually ended up at the ref station by the airport(replaced the cat for the win). You are sooooo close. Everything mentioned will help and it's all cheap. If you can get ahold of some e85, I hear that is a slam dunk. I couldn't, but tried race gas. No help.

I might throw in a suggestion of freshly gapped plugs...

Dammit. Another case of me remembering wrong. The article I'm remembering is "vacuum 101". I'll try to find the article I'm thinking of. But I'm limited to using my cellphone to surf the web, unless Heather's home and I can use her laptop.

x3 on denatured alcohol. It always worked for my FJ60 when I had it. I quart (or was it pint) per tank. Bought it at Lowe's. Be careful to get denatured and not Isopropyl, which can have a high amount of water...

I may actually have an emissions manual lying around. I had a '78 40 briefly (bad eBay experience) that was desmogged. But I'd definately be interested in the engine manual. The timing seems fine to me, it's running really strong and torquey.

I did a search and a lot of people through out the e85 solution. The only problem is that there are no public e85 stations in Phoenix. A tune up is in order when you consider that it sat for awhile.

Now that's the type of solution I'm looking for. I'm incredibly lazy because scorpion hunting has become my life of late. I think that is my best bet considering I'm only looking for a less than 1% drop in the CO I'm already putting out. If I can get it through emissions then it's not very far away at all from DD status. I've actually got a very tough decision ahead of me once the 60 is legal. Four vehicles is just really hard to justify. And that's just mine, not the wife's.

I was so close to buying the 60 from Jon, so I'd still be interested if you want to flip it. Of course, you got the good deal and put the time & effort into it, so I'd expect your price to be a little higher.;)

How about an oil change? Your so close that fresh oil may absorb just enough to get by. Did you fail on the idle or the running test? If Idle, then just lean out the idle mix by 1/4 turn clockwise, and then bring the idle speed back up to spec or spec + 50/100 rpm. John

Congrats!!!

BTW, how much on the 40 ? I think I know someone who would benefit from training on a short-wheel base vehicle

I'm undecided at the moment. I'm starting to look for similiarly built 40's to figure out what I can expect. It's locked and lifted with a bunch of 4+ plus goodies from back when it was Renegade Fab. Check out my album for pics. IH8MUD™ Forums
