Finally got some building done. Drilled the holes to mount the Timbren suspension and the lights. The chassis build will be 1st then I’ll add the tongue section. The tongue is the most complicated with the angled cuts and the thicker metal.

Made the decision that the the welder didn’t have the juice to properly fuse the metal. I used $$ to fix the issue and upgraded to a Hobart 190 Mig.

The practice welds are defiantly fusing better. Now I have enough juice to weld even the 1/4 receiver tube. I’m committed to learning the basics of making secure but not so pretty welds.

Fellow cruiserhead “Wolfi” helped me with some tips and setting, thanks Wolfi.

This is the moment you find your short one cross member. Not to worry however, since the extra “drop” steel I have is about 10’ long. I’ll just cut one tomorrow.

I was able to shim the floor, bang in the some of the bowing tube ends and get to square. Then tacked in 4 of the 6 cross members. It’s a big relief to get the chassis into one unit. I can start sizing the tongue assembly and dealing with its angles cuts.

Chassis frame is welded up. Lesson one turn on the gas. Excellent tip from Wolfi, flip the chassis around so all welds are made flat. Last good idea, start the welding on the bottom and finish on the top cause maybe the welds will improve.

Made a bunch of the parts I need for the tongue. Here’s all the tongue pieces laid in place. Lots more to cut and fit tomorrow. Also the Timbren uses an additional angle support that has to be fitted and drilled.

here's another tip...after you've cut, drilled, sanded, stained and sealed your wood floor, you should cover it before doing any trim or repair welding...DOH! ask how I know...

Why is this shiny

The hardest two cuts are done and came out great.

Used a small recip saw and a full guide. Also didn’t try cut and feather the edge.

Looks great! I'm a couple steps behind you. I have a garage full of steel and timbren axle-less suspension.

Cool! I was trying to fast track it before Memorial Day. It’s wearing me down.

If you want a specific detail photo just let me know.

Tip: The axles are heavy and an awkward shape to hoist the 10 times I found myself mounting them. If I unbolted the spindles and hubs it would have been a lot easier. I built them up for testing and design.

Tip: If your new to welding (me) a friend suggested turning the frame so all welds can be done horizontal. Great tip, huge tip!

Awesome -THANK YOU! I got the 3500 HD with 4" lift and I'm REALLY 2nd guessing the need for that much beef. Unfortunately I already assembled them to get my bed width the right length to make it overall the same width as the Cruiser. I Believe I bought the identical spacers, too!
This will be my first time using a MIG exclusively. Up until now I have relied on my arc welder - and I'm really good at grinding! haha!

I’m a better welder now!

1, I have learned to tote the mig pliers where ever I weld now.
2, I just keep the bead running when the splatter hits the area just above my welding loafers.
3, I stop the bead and flip the helmet up when sneezing

Who said an old dog can learn a few new tricks. ;)

The other “trailer” got a cell booster and directional antenna today.
