Hello Mud,

I’d like to find an igniter for a 78 FJ40. 89620-60030

I’m fine if it doesn’t have a coil on it. Just need a working igniter.

Shipped to Texas.

Thanks

Alex

I think I have a 78 specific one. Can check tomorrow, text me if I forget

I have a box full of ignitors. Probably at least one of every vintage. Never bothered to learn how to test them. I could locate one of those and test it if you want to share with me the procedure.

I’m putting a test piece from my 60 on tomorrow.

I’ll get with you all one by one once I get a known good piece on the truck. Apparently 79-87 is the same but I’ll know tomorrow.

Thanks for the mud support.

Fyi -

On my 79, as part of a FJ40-to'-FJ60 ignition upgrade, I replaced the OEM igniter model similar to the one you're looking for (89620-60030), with the newer and supposedly more reliable igniter model (19070-61060) like FJ80oregon's.

The newer igniter is designed to operate with a full 12v, without a resistor. Whereas the older model requires 7v via the resistor.

A word of caution, the wiring/connectors for the newer igniter required some minor changes for my upgrade and may for yours as well if you opt to go that route, even for testing using your FJ60 Igniter.

the +80 ignitor is defineitly the way to go for availability/commonality (there are so many available from FJ60 V8 Swaps)if you don't care about 100% originality Alex

Jumped in a 60 assembly and then took the old wiring harness and tailored it out the right way.

Solved. No need for the 78 assembly. Thanks to all that reached out.

It was so bad before; that its tough to say for sure. But if it means anything, it starts just like my 60 that it came off of.

I will say, the spark plug ignition tester that I had on it was way brighter and more consistent in the coil. That’s something.
