Had John over on Sunday to brainstorm and then Monday to get a little work done. Took the valve cover off and found some slime inside the valve cover. We attributed it to the fact that the truck is not driven often, and when it is, it's not driven very far, which means that atmospheric moisture is not burning out of the crankcase. No slime on the rocker arms, on top of the head or on the dipstick.

Adjusted the valves and found a couple of head bolts that were loose. Adjusted the valves, retorqued all of the head bolts we could get to (only two were not at least 90ft/lbs) and reinstalled the valve cover with a new gasket. We're currently waiting to see if the coolant consumption issue is still there.

As another update, it does not appear that there was ever a mass consumption of oil. Oil level has been stable since the last oil change 800 miles ago.

Some pics for soliciting more opinions. Nothing was cleaned before these pics were taken.

Have you checked the PCV valve? I have seen this problem before and visually it was the same amount of milk in the valve cover. Put a new valve in along with a new hose and fixed it.

This was after the PO replaced the head gasket.

You're referring to the moisture in the valve cover, not the coolant leak, correct?

I have not not read the whole thread but what i am pointing out is that a clogged PCV valve or hose can cause a build up a moisture that presents as a coolant leak but is actually a build up of moisture in the crank case/valve cover/etc

I have seen this before.

Simple to check!

Very true, I had the same on my 92 when I first got it and adjusted the valves
while I doubt it is the cause of such a massive lose I would agree with John that it can cause that goo
 
We all know I'm no mechanic but that engine seems awfully dirty for a rebuild and something that is rarely driven. Just an meatball observation. Let the harassment begin

Well it's been 1.6 years sense the rebuilt. And I do play in the dirt some that's the dirt!

So John, is the coolant level in the reservoir bottle still going down? Can you hear the valves like before now that you've put some miles on her or is she a bit quieter?
