You could find a local tig welder , have it built back up with ER80SD2 filler rod and have it reground to size . I've done it before on FJ60 front shafts to be shortened for my old Samurai . Biggest trick with Cardon joints is keeping the dirt out and greasing it
. Most have a weep hole to bleed off excess grease so they won't blow the seal off the ball - I always weld them shut and keep adding grease weekly in very small pumps on the gun . Ran my last one over 30k at very high angles - no issues .

Thanks guys,
The guy at the drive line shop said the angle from transfer case to the pinion had to be the reason for the Cardan joint. My truck appears taller than stock, so it could have been added after new springs were installed?? Either way, I may end up having a bad drive shaft that I can't use, so trying to have it repaired may be worth a try considering 1) I'm not needing 4 wheel drive anytime soon and 2) a new shaft is quite spendy (as they say). In the mean time, The shop hasn't got to it yet, so I'm still crossing my fingers!

I didn't get lucky with the drive shaft; it's not repairable by my local drive line shop. But I did talk to a Land Cruiser shop (Stoney's) and they can make a shaft that according to them, will be more reliable than the shaft with the Cardan type u-joint, and cheaper than something from Toyota (if they even make one for my truck anymore). They want my 4.11 differentials, so I may do a swap of some sort.

I got the drive shaft issue fixed. Stoney's began by thinking they could modify mine; they soon realized that it would be easier to use one they had and modify it and not bother with mine. So, I no longer have a double u-joint and it works perfectly, at least here on the street.
With that problem seemingly solved, I got on the other issue; the 5 speed. As we all know, the 4 speed max's out at 50-55 MPH, maybe 60. That's all we need off road, but on the highway ,we might need a little more; the H55F is the answer. Yes?

Hello all
I'm new here. But I've read this entire blog and the build is truly outstanding! I live in tampa and I'd love to come check out that troopy in person!
But I have a BIG problem and it's a (sorta) sad story; I find cars for friends (as a hobby) and a buddy asked me to find him an FJ. Well I found several, but I stumbled across a bad ass HJ47 sitting on the side of the road right down the street! It's a RHD diesel from Aus. Not knowing ANYTHING about land cruisers (until my buddy asked me to look for him) I quickly shot a pic to him...and he could hardly say 'yes that's the one!' Fast enough. Well I'm a man of my word, and so tomorrow it is leaving to go to Arizona. But I've done some research in the last 2 weeks (while it's been sitting in my warehouse) and I've even tinkered around on it and got a few things working again (blower, horns). Well spending 20 hours in/under her, and reading this blog...now I'm in love with my Troopy! But...she has to go. And I suspect my buddy will be a member here shortly...while he enjoys (and probably partially or completely restores) his Troopy.
Great blog guys. I hope to be a troopy owner again someday

That is a bad-ass looking Troopy. You need to get one for yourself!
Welcome to the Mud Dr. Jay.

If someone wants a roof rack like that one, I've got one hanging in my garage. I'm not going on safari anytime soon.

Hey man
Yeah my new favorite color is mustard!!
I envision doing a full resto like yours one day (sooner than later!)
Send me pics of your roof-rack
Thanks
J

Mine doesn't have the bottom bar and my ladder comes off at the back. I don't have the bottom support bars either. Mine simply sits in the rain channel with similar hold down hardware. My gutters are not going to be gouged by the rack ever again. Rusty gutters are repaired. I may have to scrap the roof rack if nobody can use it.

I have a troopy now and would be interested in your roof rack. If the previous mudders fall through let me know.

Also unrelated question:
What is the purpose or benefit of a centrifugal oil filter? Some HJ47s have it/ some dont. Why?
Thanks

I believe it throws particulate from the oil into a centrifugal oil system that spins the oil and extracts particulates and returns clean oil to the machine. I might be wrong!
