I believe it throws particulate from the oil into a centrifugal oil system that spins the oil and extracts particulates and returns clean oil to the machine. I might be wrong!

Well Toyota agrees with you Scott:

And I also stumbled across what Toyota had to say about the double cardan joint (that we were discussing earlier) when they introduced it with the 60-series Aug 1980:

So which troopys came with it and which ones did not? And why?

Well the info I posted is about engine-improvements made with the introduction of the HJ60 series in August 1980.

And I think that's where the 2H engine first appeared.

I gather from what you're saying that some 2H engines never got the centrifugal filter so I'm guessing Toyota later decided not to fit it on some of their 2H engines.

Perhaps this was a cost-saving measure or they reconsidered and thought the centrigugal filter had been over-kill? I'm unsure..

PS. I'm under the impression that where engines got the centrifugal filter they got it IN ADDITION TO A STANDARD PAPER-ELEMENT FILTER .... Am I correct here?

Thanks a bunch Tom. As you may have read, I got the front shaft replaced with a non-Cardan u joint, unfortunately I then ordered a new 5 speed for the truck and will now have to get 2 new drive shafts made. $300 down the drain, due to my own stupidity. I sold my FJ62 and used that money for the H55F and compatible transfer case. I should have thought about that when I was dealing with the front shaft. Failure to plan means your plan fails (or something like that).
Thanks again!

Tom,
Off topic.
I have to ask. Have you ever watched the TV series (out of production now) Flight of the Conchords?
One of my favorites; I always think of it when I see you're home location on your posts. I love those guys!

Yes I have watched it.

They seem to enjoy world-wide popularity.

Hello,
I got that mustard hj47 from dr jay!
This is an awesome thread for a newbie like me. Thank you all.
Gswest that is an awesome build.
Could you guys help point me in the right direction?
My troopy has a tank i
Underneath the body under the drivers seat(its rhd). Its got hoses but they seem disconnected. Is this part of the vacuum system?
The brakes work but are kind of weak/ mushy..... No vacuum?
The car starts and runs great to me but the 4wd shifter will not shift out of 2h
Wont budge. Is there a procedure to follow for it to shift to 4h and then 4L?
Is the transfer case also vacuum operated

Actually, tracing the 2 hoses from that tank. One goes to the back of the alt and the other to the brake booster. There is an electrical connector on that tank with a wire that goes nowhere....

Another off-topic(or maybe hijack) but I couldn't resist--ran across a you-tube video by Midnight Oil(an Aussie Band) and the video had what looked like a 70s--ish troupie in it. the video was "Beds Are Burning"(I actually like it)

Yes it is. It is the vacuum reservoir which is used to store vacuum.

Should just pull straight back from 2H into 4H. All you should need to do is put your foot on the clutch to do it. (Come to a halt for putting it in low-range though.)

That thing on the back of your alternator is your vacuum pump.

And the switch there operates a "poor vacuum alarm buzzer" on my BJ40.

That singer became a politician. And yeah, The song is catchy and Is one I have amongst my CD collection...
(I remember the 40-series in their video too.)

There's your answers, you're in the right place. If the transfer still won't shift, you might try rolling the truck a little and trying again. It's worth a try. You may have a linkage issue.

Thank you very much. I tried the clutch. No luck. Will try rolling it tomorrow. Thanks again!
Lots to learn....

Lock your hubs when you try rolling it. Also the spongy brakes are something I'm familiar with. You need to pull the wheels and brake drums, look for leaks from your brake cylinders, look at your brake shoes; they may be worn out. Then you can try adjusting the the pads out to see if that takes up some of the play. Mine were way out of adjustment due to me adjusting them in the wrong direction.

Edit. My suggestion may be useless if its locked in 2 wheel drive!

Thank you sir!
Will be doing that as well. I have to find how to check if the vacuum system is working at all

This thing is freaking huge and awesome

I picked up the new H55F 5 speed today and the used late model transfer case. I got the gasket and seal kit with a new shifter (which has to be bent to work properly I've heard). This upgrade has been talked about plenty on this site, so I'll have to read up before I begin. I'm not sure if I need to rebuild this case or not, but it seems prudent since the H55F is new. I'm wishing I could have held onto the FJ62 longer so I wouldn't be rushed to do the swap. I needed the money and the time seemed right. I'm hoping that if I can get everything I need in advance, I can do the swap quickly. Unlike everything else that I've done on this truck.

Pics of the new/used transfer case. It's supposedly a later model transfer case that's compatible with the H55F. I haven't really looked into what I have to do to make the switch from 4 speed to 5 speed other than knowing I have to modify the lengths of both drive shafts, modify my opening where the transfer case shifter and transmission shifter come through the floor. I have to take the rear output shaft from my transfer case (with rear parking brake hub) and install it into the new/old transfer case (it's supposed to be compatible according to Cruiserparts.net who sold me the whole package of parts). My clutch and bell housing are supposed to match up to the new transmission. We'll see how this all works out, but we know this is a common conversion and it'll get done one way or another.
