Tearing down my HJ47 troopy

The shifter will work fine, problem is it will hit your leg in second gear. At least when installed in a 55. The shifter is actually two pieces with a rubber connector between the two metal pieces. If you use heat in order to bend the shifter, it will melt the rubber and come apart. I tried it and finally just cut the bottom piece, that goes into the top of the transmission and welded a 5/8ths rod to it. prebent to where I liked it.

You mean it will hit my leg in reverse. I'm in a right hand drive Troopy.

, Good point. You might not have a problem. Best to do some more research before cutting. Top of my head, reverse doesn't go so far over that way. I'll go check mine.

Edit... Even with my shifter now being straight, it doesn't come close to your leg, so you should be good to go. You can always change it after the install.

That's fantastic. I've read and copied all the tech articles here on the swap and still have questions. I'm not sure what year transfer case ( Cruiserparts. Net) sent me. I'll call them tomorrow. It's listed as a late model transfer case. I need to know to get the right shifter knob, and to know the shift pattern. I'll post up some pics later today after I take it apart. Thanks guys!

I got the case apart and I found a broken ear on the front output shaft bearing retainer. I asked the guys at Cruiserparts.net (before I ordered) if the case was inspected and they said it was. We'll see if they stand behind their parts and send me a new (used) bearing retainer. I may be able to use parts from my case since its a split case, but as I said, I'm not sure on the year of the case they sent me. It was advertised as compatible with the 5 speed and that's all I know (besides the "late model" identification)?? Other than that, the rest of the case has some corrosion on various bolts and some pitting here and there. The gears don't show any chipped teeth. I'm afraid I'll need to install a rebuild kit either way unless I can use some of my parts from the Troopy's case. I think I did a rebuild on that one as well as the FJ62. And come to think of it, they were the same other than the FJ62 had a push button on the dash to actuate the 4 wheel drive. I believe it was a pneumatic actuator as I recall.

Cruiserparts.net says they are sending me a replacement bearing receiver today.

Im sorry if im breaking any rule by asking questions on your thread about my HJ.
I dont know how common these trucks are or if they share a lot with regular FJs of BJs...
So since you have taken your HJ apart, you probably know a lot more about them than I ever will!

3 holes on the topof the hood down the middle and 2 forward facing ones spread apart evenly.
Im guessing a washer nozzle for the one closest to the windshield but the rest?

Looks like someone added the chrome spear at some point. The two little holes on the front......no idea.

The washer nozle hole is the only one I can identify. These trucks were used for so many different purposes; those holes could be for anything. I found copper tubing underneath my truck going front to back. I have no idea what that was for.

Also did these ever have the windshield fold down holders? I dont see holes on mine for them... Maybe they were filled in or just never came with them..

When I bought it back in 1981, my BJ had holes like those two front ones plus two more pairs of them either side of that to mount an air deflector (presumably to try and improve fuel economy).

I can find many images of HJ47 models with them and many without them..

Did you have to get a different transfer case and did you have to alter yor tunnel cover?

The transfer case was fine. I did rebuild it while it was split but it was perfect. I have a crazy 3" body lift so the only alteration needed was to cut a hole in the tunnel and move everything about 3" towards the seat.
