Talk me out of a 100 series

Thank you all for the input. This is the reason I love our Mud community. I'm going to have the wife get behind the wheel of a 100 and see where it goes from there. In the end it's her call. She wants to drive my 80, but that one is mine;)

If she wants to drive your 80 then she’s going to LOVE the ride of the 100. I got rid of my 2013 Tundra and $600 payment for a 2002 100 with 190k and could not be happier. Instead of 600 going towards payment I spend it on upgrades. The way I see it, in a year or two my land cruiser will be absolutely awesome. I like the power, comfort and stares I get everywhere I go. It’s not often you see a 100 on 35s

I don't have anything useful to say other than I love my 1998 Land cruiser. It's nearly 20 years old and still smells new on the inside.

You should buy one and don't be afraid of the "early year" 100 series.

I always wanted an LC and when test drove my LX fell completely in love with it. I create fake maintenance items just to work on it. When I do road trips I get depressed when reach destination because I have to stop driving it.
So no way I'll talk you out of a 100.

One thing to consider if your wife is used to drive a much newer vehicle is the reacción/acceleration.
If you floor the 4runner it will go, if you floor the 99 LC it will look at you and laugh at your face. It is slow, but you might be used to it hving an 80.

I also agree that the price seems high, based on the fact that I have a 99 LX470 (189k) and would be surprised to get more than $6-8k for it. With that being said though, “value” can vary greatly based on the vehicle condition and prior service/upkeep.

I bought my LX about 10 years ago even though I was originally looking for a Landcruiser. All the LC’s I looked at were thrashed, rusted, etc. I ended up getting an older LX, but it had super low miles (67k). Even better yet, it had extensive maintenance done at the Lexus dealer. Lexus calls for far more frequent service intervals than Toyota even though most of the vehicle is the same. Doesn’t make any sense, but it’s nice when you buy a used one that has been arguably overmaintained by some standards.

The reason I mention this, is if you are flexible on what you are looking for you might be able to find a very gently used LX vs a LC.

I finally joined the forum, but have admired for years the mods and punishment folks dish out on their LC/LX. I think it’s safe to say that outside groups like this, the average used LX has led a gentler life than its sibling LC, so you might find some deals out there if you aren’t set on a LC.

There are definitely things to consider with an LX (like AHC), so I’m not trying to say an LX is better than an LC in this case, just that it might open more purchase options.

Good luck with whatever decision you make!

My thoughts EXACTLY! I am always looking for excuses to interact with my 100series LX......either wrenching on something or buying and attaching something to it. It's an addiction.

I also think that you are heading in the right direction (trading "down" to get rid of car payment and getting a more solid vehicle) but I would also sell the 4Runner and try for an 03+ with the 5 speed and a few other updates even if it costs slightly more (the 99 IS overpriced too).

^^^^ Zackly. My family has three 80s and three 100s. I love the 80s but the the 100s are the beast among beasts IMO. The thought continues to cross my mind at how thankful we are in the US for these ridiculous machines to be available. And that rich people buy them before us. Thank the Lord for the 1%ers.

You're nuts. Have you driven a 100 series? :D
I have ridden in a 100 and they are nice for running to Starbucks or the mall.:worms: Believe it or not I actually like the 80's lack of electrical do-dads , solid front axle and slow, simple, 3FE:meh: However, I fantasize about a driveway full of Land Cruisers regardless of what series they are.

Cheers,
Scot

Sorry to make things worse

Well I suppose we can keep this going... 70>80>105>100;) I have no opinion on the 200 because I personally feel it is too big but have heard it is incredible off road.

Look at these yummy cookies.... oh dedgumit, crazy hundy photobombing again.

Good questions dace. I'm not sure...I'll ask next time we speak...so likely not in time for a reply to this thread.

The 5 speed is better in the mountains to me. Yes, the 2UZ is more powerful than the 1FZ, but simply dropping the trans into 4th keeps it from shifting all the time. Whereas only turning off overdrive isn’t enough in a lot of cases in the 4 speed. YMMV.

Yeah if we can have a 105 in the states, I think hands down that would be the most popular.

Or if they ever made a 205, that would make things very interesting.
