3rd attempt

Thanks Peter--your method is next, and likely better, but first......

Last one.

Last of my final three allotment.
Thanks for your patience towards a novice.

Thanks for the pictures if you decide you don't want them let me know. I am very interested. With these I can see no reason for a middle step. Just a good place to put a license plate bracket.

I believe the three allotment you are talking about is per post. I wonder who we could get to make some of these. The only tricking parts would get the radious right in the back corners. These are wider than the FJ40 bumperettes correct?

Sorry it took so long to figure out how to post up a photo.

The bumperettes look real simple to make.
I wonder if the FJ40 bumperettes could be used with a welded diamond-plate top?
There isn't any full length protection or at the corners, and the installed photo I had seen looked rather dorky.

From the one photo I posted you can see how low the license plate hangs with the "factory" system, even though the license lamps are tucked up and protected. The valence on the 1983-up beds are different--there is a molded cutout for the spare-tire crank. The 1983-up frame appears to have the first signs of the drilled holes in the rear frame crossmember.

Maybe installing these bumperettes as far outboard as possible would afford more rear protection.

I'll try to take a photo of one of these installed for you if you'd like--maybe later this afternoon.

they would be a piece of cake to reproduce

first person that comes to mind within the community is Awl_TEQ, I'm still trying to get my neighbor (hauling my trailer with his mobile home) to set a date to drive up to Alberta for a couple of his beds. his work looks to be excellent. I'm guessing that not only would the bumperettes be easy for him but the brackets also:meh:

Yep, they're almost twice as wide and about 4 inches deeper than the FJ40 bumperette.
I did come across a second set of them but years ago gave them away to a buddy. This other set seemed thinner gauge steel, but same layout and dimensions.

I betcha that AWL-Teq could whip out a set in a flash. I am willing to loan Kevin one if there's any interest, just don't want to pay shipping--about 8 lbs each.

BTW, now looking at the pair, despite the catalogue listing them as "handed" with different part numbers for each side of the truck, they appear to be identical and symmetric--they are not bowed out like on the FJ40s. Maybe there is a difference and I have two of the same side. I cannot remember if they came on this truck or where I came across them years ago.

Out of curiosity someday I would like to actually see the center mounted license plate bracket and lamp setup.

That is one clean truck. I hope to get mine as nice one day. But I don't like how far the bumperettes stick out the back. I thought they were even with the back so you could drop the tailgate flat. That was the advantage of the bumperettes. Now I wonder what came on the 64-67 FJ45LP-Bs that were imported to the US. The rubber pads on the bed below the tailgate on the sides make me think in stock form the tailgate could drop open. Another thing I think the frame on mine isn't that close to the back of the bed. I will be around it this weekend and will do a little checking. Thought the FJ40 bumperettes would be under the bed if they were used.:hhmm::meh:

Well I was wrong the distance looks the same on my 65 so FJ40 bumperettes won't work. I did notice that the tail light housings are the same left and right. Just one side has the cut out. Looking at the ones Coolerman restored were the same. At first I thought I had two left left side housing but then notice there was no license plate light cut out.

So I thinking use the bumper I have since it provides some tail end protection. On the tail lights how have other done with installing later tail lights since the early ones were indented.

John, I have seen a couple done, flush mounted like the 40 series. It looked like the owners [or their mechanics] welded the stock openings shut and then cut out an opening that would accomodate the late 40 light.

I put later 40 backup lights on my rear valance for now, but will probably change to updated 40 series tailight housings down the road.

On another note, I picked up another H41 with the three speed tailshaft, and am toying with the idea of putting a Fairey OD to use.;)

Best

Mark A.

Mark are yours tail light housings the same left and right? I'll post pictures of mine later today.

I have H41 but it's not going in the 45. That will get a H42/three speed trnansfer case/Fairey Overdrive. I had planned on using a A440F I have been sitting on since the mid ninties but hadn't found a good 3FE to use. So I'll use the 2F it already has.

If you do go the with a Fairey OD and it's used I should have spare bearings for everything but the one that fits inside the cone that fits inside the transfer case. For that one I should have a part number from the bearing company not Fairey's part number which is worthless.

DOes any one know what these were for? Both side have one on the bottom of the bed in the back

The pad is stock. I have the remnants of one only on my lwb. Greenfox has both of his intact on his lwb, so I told him to watch out!!!!

My taillight housings are like yours, licence lens in one side only. Since I moved the plate to the rear bumper, I don't really care. I suppose one day I'll just put some cheesy light on the bumper for it.:hillbilly:

And FWIW, I found the BEST thing I could do for the back of the 45 was to get a set of the repro hinges that 65fj45 made up last year.:) Now when I have chores to do, I just pull the three cotter pins, unhook the chains and the tailgate is out of the way...COMPLETELY!

The half-moon metal pieces are reflector mounting brackets, 75155-90332, used as options on some early pickups in certain markets.

The reflectors are probably 81910-60060, which were alternately mounted directly on the rear valence under the outboard hinges, or occasionally to the lower rear sides of some beds. They also showed up on the earlier FJ40s.
